Sterling’s contract - three year extension confirmed

Who said 100k/week?

The line is he wants £250k/w like Aguero and De Bruyne.

You're saying he's already on £195k/w, so even if City are offering only a 10% bump in his current deal, there's a 30 grand a week difference, not 100.

Raheem is £170k a week before bonuses, so when I said Sane is on £65k a week and is essentially on a third of his present wages, I meant just in the ball park.

De Bruyne's basic wage is far higher than £250k a week - it's over £300k a week when his bonuses are included.

So no wonder Sterling and Ward want to get paid. 40 goals + Assists in 46 games last season and he's earning 60% of our other main contributors.

You're talking about making a rod for our own back by paying Sterling, but if that's true about KDB earning 300k+, the standard has already been set by his contract.

As soon as Sané hits those levels you're predicting he will later in the season, or Jesus has a 30 goal season, they'll be comparing his salary to our highest earners, and wanting parity just like Sterling has.

Sadly, it's considerably more than that already, hence City don't really have much wiggle room, outside of causing a future stampede.

Raheem turned down £110k a week to stay at Liverpool, so it gives you an idea how much we pushed the boat out the first time.

For context (I can't really say how I know) Sane earns £65k a week, which wasn't too shabby for a kid and his previous wages at Schalke, but if he's to be commensurate with his current valuation, it about a third of where he needs to be just to match Raheem's current salary.

And this is without the fantastic bonuses City pay to keep basic salaries within limits.
If he turned down Liverpools offer of £110K then it seems more likely that he`s on £150-175K at City then.
As you say it doesn`t give too much room for manoeuvre but I suspect there will be.
I`m certain one of the tabloids stated a couple of months ago that Sane was to be given a new improved contract.

Depends if you wish to compare KDB and Sterling, I suppose?

Personally, and also City at this stage, anyhow, Raheem isn't in the same elite postcode as KDB.

No, he's clearly not but if we give Sterling, for example 200k/week, do you think Sané after a season when he makes the step up will compare himself with Sterling, or will he be comparing himself with KDB?

Do you think Jesus when he finally nails down a starting spot or has a 25-30 goal season will compare himself with Sterling, or Aguero?

My guess is they'll be comparing themselves to the highest earners and demand the same, regardless of Sterling's salary.

If we're going to have a team of superstars like Pep's Barcelona, we're going to end up with a wage bill like theirs one way or another.

Yup, essentially. City are now at a crossroads as we have invested in younger players who will only get better will have to pay them what they think they are worth, or someone else will.

For me, I don't care, as long as people are performing and it means we are avoiding what United and Liverpool are now having to do, which is pay £50m just for above average talent.

I suppose the point for a fair few of them is that their asset value has rocketed. £44m for Sterling looks a snip given his value right now. Same with many of the others.

You've hit the nail on the head. There's not much room to be cute with wages; everyone knows what everyone else is on and the best players are going to be paid roughly in line with each other regardless. If Raheem is on £170k a week already, it's actually not insane that Ward would ask for KDB money. His position alone as one of only a handful of English born players good enough for us goes a long way towards that. The wage bill is going way up over the next few years...it's a welcome by product of investing well in young talent.

Hope it gets sorted but if not, wish him well and move on. He’s a great player but not gonna go all scouse on him If the lad chooses to move on.

Doesn't have to be English born of course, hence the investment in the academy and the youth players. Actually, just for the pedants out there, he isn't English born anyway :)
