I don't really think paying Sterling what he's rumoured to want would quite smash our wage structure in the way people are suggesting and it definitely wouldn't put us in the same boat as Man United. United have put players on huge salaries as part of a slap dash transfer policy designed to simply stop other clubs from buying them or to make some kind of statement.
Sterling's importance to this side over the past 12 months is up there with anyone's really and we'd be awarding a player top dollar for top performances. That's how it should be and it's not the same thing as what United have been doing. They've been giving top money to shit players and also guaranteeing ridiculous salaries to players for periods that will take them way past their peak.
As for the likes of Bernardo and Sané, if they can match the consistency Sterling has started to show and show they're fulfiling their potential by the time their contracts need to be renewed, then to be honest, they'll be worth it too if you look at the market value for that level of player. These are the guys we want to takeover from our ageing elite players and if they're meeting the standard i'd expect them to be hankering for those kinds salaries when the time comes regardless of what happens to Sterling (because I'm pretty sure someone else will pay it). If we want a squad full of world class players then there's going to be a fair few players on top whack. Our top tier players like David Silva and Aguero have negotiated what will probably be their last contracts with us now so I can't see any rammifications there. There's only KDB in the group ahead of Sterling who will probably need some kind of ridiculous lift when we ask him to eventually renew and tbh, you can argue he's one of the top 5 players in the world, so he's worth it.
