Because they were out of touch stupid bastards - they lacked the capacity and the expertise to analyse the results of the 2014 EU elections that saw them poll 3rd place to predict the outcome of the following years GE. The EU election polled some 16m votes - the following years GE nearly 32m. UKIP polled half a million votes more in the EU election than in the GE but on only half the total number of votes cast. Cameron and his Eton cabinet and advisers shat themselves and this was seized upon by what are now known as Brexiteers to include the promise of the referendum in his 2015 manifesto. From that point of wobble the die was cast and all was lost.
So in a nutshell even though more than half the country isn’t fond of the Eu, haven’t had a say in it since the 70’s, And in Eu elections UKIP gathered plenty of votes for a party consisting of a fair member of loons you and other Eu fans and status quo cowards think the continuing policy of ignoring the electorate is a good thing?
