If we do buy another center forward when Kun leaves, then this guy is it. As you said, the perfect false 9 forward, let him play at Benfica for 2 more seasons then bring him in when Kun leaves. Would have Brazil and Portugal's best striker prospects for over a decade.

Hmmmm! Interesting. Because of the precision passing and vision he shows I've alwaysl just thought of him as a future AM. But you might be right. He might be a Suarez type Striker. Scorer with the skills of a midfielder.
 
Over the next two summer windows 8 players will be out of contract:-
2019 - Mangala, Kompany
2020 - Bravo, Fernandinho, Silva, Zinchenko, Gundogan and Delph

Therefore I believe we will sign more than two players this summer, otherwise there could be a major overhaul required in summer 2020.
Of those above only Gundogan is likely to potentially extend beyond 2020, if he were to sign a new contract this summer. Kompany may renew this season but only likely for 1 year to see him through to 2020.

There is in addition those whose positions are vulnerable over the next 18 months to add to the names above, e.g. Mahrez, Otamendi, Including RB which is a favourite position for discussion on Bluemoon.
 
Get Chilwell for covering Mendy to finally get rid of the leftback problems.
Get Ndombele for Ferna. He is no fancy De Jong but a strong physical powerhouse with great technique and passing, just like Ferna.
Get De Ligt to replace Kompany/Otamendi/Mangala.

Then we're set for many years.
 
Mangala out , otamendi out, bravo our (maybe?), possibly Delph, possibly Gundogan (rumours) . Has there been anything linked with who will most likely leave us in the summer? Drawing blanks. Just seen pep said he will trim the squad in the summer. This might be the first season where I am genuinely more looking forward to see who’s leaving than coming in.

I moved Kompany to 2020 because I believe he'll sign a one year deal and spend most of his time transitioning to management. I'd expect Garcia and the other young kid to pick up the few games John, Eric and Nico get rested in. And Kompany to only play if a major injury hit one of the 3 senior defenders. We won't need a replacement until 2021 when Nico leaves (assuming neither Garcia it the other kid step up).

Delph and Bravo will go. Muric already replaced Bravo and if Zee goes too. Then we''ll need 1 LB to replace both Delph and Zee. Personally I think Zee re-ups and becomes that LB.

I think Gundogan re-ups with us. Fernandihno .unsure. Depends on how successful the summer of 2019 replacement is. I think 2020 might be David Silva's last year. His replacement is here already, Berny. And the backup to that AMs is also here in Foden. Who should be 20 then and in line for major playing time. So no replacement for Silva is required.

Looking at the above, it's still the same 2 to 3 signings need the next 2 windows.

Do we release a couple of players early as your suggestions mention above and receive a transfer fee and put towards better quality or do we agree to run their contract down? Alternatively a couple will likely be offered a new contract extending by a year, but I don’t see any of these being around in 18 months.

The quality in our squad will make these surplus, and a couple of years of not being a regular starter may see them seek football elsewhere.

I would be happy with this, especially Rice as the understudy for Fernie.

Whilst he may not yet have the sublime pin point passing accuracy of De Jong, he seems more robust in the mould of Fernie & more importantly he will be like a sponge with Pep’s coaching & his much talked about work ethic.

Closest thing to De Jong in my opinion especially when the locals are beginning to mention flashes of B.Moore in the lad.

Everyone raving about Ndombele who looks solid but doesn’t really stand out for me.

Well any good DM will improve us coz Fernandihno is coming dangerously close to the cliff. It will happen soon, and the more prepared we are the better. It's nice how Kompany's wall happened quietly. The replacement just came in (John and Eric) and Kompany slowly went to backup. And was able to muster some great games and some not so great. Normal for backups.

David Silva's transition also is happening in front of our eyes. I said in the summer that if we started the season with David Silva and Dihno as the 1st two choices off the bench them we'd be great.

We didn't bcoz Kev got injured and we missed out on Jorghino. But we are slowly moving in that direction. The goal this summer (as it was supposed to be last summer) is to find the guy who would bench Dihno.

Simply put, if Dihno is an integral starter next season, we wil lhave lots of problems. His replacement is the only priority.

Personally, I guess Ndombele seems the current best option we are looking at. With Rice and Never in play. Any of the 3 may suffice.

As for Chillwell, I don't get the attraction. I'd rather we go for the RB in AWB who is clearly a great talent and punt on LB until a worthy one is available. Besides, Zinchencko is better than Chillwell.

Any player who doesn't have the potential to outplay Zee isn't worth wasting top dollar on. And Chillwell isn't.
