Matthijs de Ligt

To not play ?

Rather than sign players we need ?

Doesn't make sense imo.
De Ligt would bench Stones easily.

Every spring we're forced to rely on Kompany in CL knock outs, when you need all the quality that you have in the squad.
Where was Stones when we played Liverpool last year? On the bench after another injury. Where was he when we played Spurs this season? On the bench, in a terrible form caused by self-inflicted 'personal problems'.

He's done nothing defensively that I've seen, which would bench any of our cbs.

Maybe he will, but not yet.

Benching our 4th choice CB shouldn't be too hard

He is a better tackler than John. He tackles like a young Vinny or Vidic. A bit of a bully tackler. And he is very good in the air. As an overall footballer, I think John's better. Both of our guys are.

But he is big, 19, and a bully. So understandably, there is lots of hype.

Personally, I don't think improvement at CB, even if achievable, pushes the needle of our overall improvement much.

Problem with this potential signing is it pushes Stones out and could mean he would want off so we'd have to sign another UK trained player.

Guess we'd look to keep him around least one more season. Even if it challenges him to improve unless Pep uses 3 at the back then one will have to sit. Rotation at CB is not ideal IMHO and has led to pourus defending.

One of those 3 will be unhappy barring rotation.

He's scored headers from corners against Juve and Spuds. Not saying our current defenders dont score but atm our corners and free kick goals have dried up. Personally I think the kid looks a born leader. Intelligent on the ball, strong defensively, can pass and score and he will only get better. Would love to see him at City.

Or that he just wants the best possible young CB to replace a departing Otamendi.

Yet this causes us further congestion at CB that led to Pep appearing to rotate to keep players happy.

Nico wants out and maybe Vinny for similar reasons.

Another selling point is that Ajax aren't a million miles away from us in terms of style of play. So he would arguably adapt to Pep's system fairly quickly, whereas someone else (and we need someone else if we're losing two already) would take time to adapt. Look how long it took Stones to stop making mistakes, although admittedly Laporte was a hit straight away.

Just to clarify that one cannot draw comparisons between Stones & Laporte in terms of development. One was an undisputed started at 19 and incredible defensive leader for an always spirited collective at the Basque club. I like Stones & his potential but they are nowhere near one another in terms of their career development

The point was that we play a difficult system and it takes some CBs longer than others to learn it. Some never learn it (but then bizarrely get given a new contract).

Snippets emerging that he wants to play in the Prem......I'm not sure we could offer him the game time though, and he would also very definitely block the progress of our own.

If we re going after him he will be a starter straight away.. You don t play over 60 70 m on a player to make him warm the bench

Indeed.

But when Stones was fit earlier in the season, we had the best two cbs in Europe, both way better than him.

We have several positions need filling.

Doesn't make sense to sign him, unless it's to.play def mid, imo.

That depends doesn't it ? If the General does going either in a part ex or just straight transfer we have to replace and this chap fits the bill perfectly.

Edit: I really must read ahead before posting...

For me Mahrez was never going to be a first team player... That was 60 fucking millions wasted on something we didn t need
Or you could look at it that spending that 60 million stopped him scoring or assisting the other night and fucking our title charge up.
