Bluemoon Angling Thread

National Resources Wales and the Wye and Usk Foundation.
Thanks. Interesting. I thought the WUF was held up as a model for river restoration. It is interesting though that you hold bodies that influence the health of the river as responsible whereas in Scotland we tend to blame factors that impact the salmonid population ‘at sea’ (mainly overfishing of salmon prey and salmon farming). What do you think has caused the collapse on the Wye? Btw, I fished it for Barbel last season for the first time and the guy I fished with said exactly the same as you - hadn’t seen a salmon all season.

No doubt the predation, overfishing and bastard salmon farms are the some of the main factors at sea imo mate.
I would also chuck climate change in that mix too.
There was an interesting article about it in the Telegraph last weekend.
These issues are going to take a long time to sort.

The levels of predation on the Wye are the highest I have ever seen mate.. cormorants, goosanders, mink, otters, seals etc etc.
What we could, and attempted to do, was increase the survival rates of juvenile fish in the Wye by means of a semi natural rearing project.
More smolts getting out to sea means more salmon to come back I reckon.

They closed it down.

Tossers.

Yeah, I have read numerous articles that say these rearing projects don’t work but they seem to do ok on the Tyne. It makes my blood boil when I think how much predation goes on from these birds. The RSPB have a lot to answer for protecting these vermin over fish. Loch Leven was returned to a wild fishery around 10 years ago and still struggles to be viable. No bloody wonder when there are 100’s of cormorants roosting on Scart island. I think we will see the extinction of the Atlantic salmon within a generation and the only people that seem to care are anglers.

Agreed mate...and the sea trout are in an even worse situation!

If these fish were visible and all fluffy and cuddly there would be a fuckin uproar.

I should say to anyone interested... Join the Wye Salmon Association!
Doing their best to get the SNR project goin again.
It only costs £10 a year and they were offering free fishing days with their 'rods on rivers' campaign.

Lovely weather today so popped out for a few hours on a local reservoir as the rivers are still overflowing. In my opinion, the reservoir is over-stocked but at least it means you're generally guaranteed some bites.

Water level was high and the water was very cloudy but it was very warm and plenty of fish were topping so set up on my new ultralight float rod and fished at my rod tip on maggot.

After a slow start, I started getting small roach before eventually getting a hybrid of 3lbs 2ozs. Then I hooked a carp which led me a merry dance on 2lbs line before shedding the hook. Went very quiet after that so I packed up. May go back tomorrow as I enjoyed having the whole place to myself. I'll see how the river looks.

Had three Perch of 2lb and above ( i really should buy some scales) from the small lake at Gyrn in North Wales last week.
Will be going again this Sunday I think.
We need to set that trip up mate. Sunday is no good for me though due to football coaching in the morning.

No carp makes a monkey out of me twice. Went back to the same spot today and beefed up my tackle to 3lbs line, 14s hook and treble maggot. There are no snags and no weed at this time of year so that was heavy enough.

Don't know if it was the same fish but, after a 20 minute fight, I landed a superbly fit, stout common of around 15lbs. Biggest worry was whether the Drennan ultralight rod would cope which it did admirably.

God loves a trier

Will it ever stop fucking raining ? River is up and down and consequently out of sorts though I've managed the odd chub later on in the day when I've been able to get there including one trotting on my new(ish) centrepin.

Done a bit of stillwater fishing too but, as usual at this time of year, the fishing is really hard until the last couple of hours. Managed the odd decent roach and skimmer but hard going and, apparently, getting harder as the weather deteriorates.

Still. Haven't blanked since I retired which is a record for me.
