Bring the Noise

Defo agree we need to take the ultras route and I’m glad other people on this thread feel the same, the English style is dead and has been for a long time and it all seems a bit tinpot flicking V’s to the away end instead of singing. I can honestly say this without a hint of sarcasm that we could have one of the best atmosphere’s in Europe if we put our minds to it, the passion is defo there but it’s just not coming out the right way atm. Keep up the good work jrb

People might not be aware this isn't the first time a megaphone was used at City or brought in. A well known ex guvnor who went on to become a football coach in the Oldham area brought a megaphone back from Groclin in 2003. The next home game Middlesbrough at home he brought it out from the back row of south stand level 2 - block 216. It wasn't used in a serious way and most people just laughed. But it was used ! This person then used the megaphone to conduct chants when him and other mates put together the "cool as duck" CD at Abraham moss centre which is the CD played at Mary Ds. Ie when you hear "I know a hooker she's called violet na na na na na" its all through the same megaphone. JRB you may also have used a megaphone once before in kippax corner a few years if memory is right ? Which game was it ? That would make Shaktar the 3rd game a megaphone used in the home end

St James park was weird yesterday...on the stream I was watching all you could hear was the city fans for the vast majority of the match - thought the Geordie fans had a bit moe about them than that

The answer is simple and well known songs. There’s nothing wrong with the simple not really here or city till I die.

Not many off our songs are easy to drum along to.

the same 'singing section' who most games sing nothing at all. all a lot of those fans want to do is throw v signs at the away fans. they think they are too cool to sing, poznan, wave flags, basically do anything support wise. the traditional atmosphere that you talk about, rarely exists now at city and something different has to be done. 2 games a season of great noise is shocking.

we all want the same thing on there, but i think the idea that we can regularly recreate noise levels of the past isnt going to happen. two big games this season already (chelsea and spurs) and both were really bad in my opinion.

bring your drum against united mate ;)
Something different doesn’t have to be done, we just need to find a consistency for when we’re good now.

2 is a huge underestimation of how many good atmospheres we have a season n’all.

The one thing we do need to change is where the Singing Section is, and make it worth being part of. Nobody says with pride “I’m in South Stand Level 1” “I’m in the City Singing Section”, neither of them mean anything. We need a proper vocal stand with a proper name.

Until then there’s so much we can still do without resorting to Europop Ultras/Crawley Town level drummer boy rubbish.

We can easily recreate noise levels of the past, I actually think our best atmospheres have improved greatly in the last few years. We just need to find a way of being more consistent:

- stop playing music and inane shite over the tannoy at ten thousand decibels right up to kick off
- encourage SSL1 and Kippax Corner to get to their seats before kick off and encourage them, without the shite being hammered at us over the tannoy, to start singing songs at about 10to3
- ditch the pathetic 5to3 karaoke of Blue Moon over the tannoy

Try anything and everything before ever trying a drum.

Spot on.

Sing the classics at home; sing the lesser known ones away and in the pub and over time they can become classics. But when we’re struggling for getting everyone involved just sing the classics.

Sing the City chants too. They’re the ones everyone in the ground joins in with. Even something simple like “Oh Kevin de Bruyne” doesn’t get everyone singing but “We Are City From Maine Road” gets more involved.

Often new songs that don’t really have many words tend not to last long neither, as they get boring fast. Look at “My Father Said To Me One Day... Ark Now Here”, long and complicated but it’s a mainstay that everyone likes.

And don’t sing the same song on 6 minutes, 11 minutes, 19 minutes, 48 minutes and 62 minutes (yes, I’m talking about the Edin Džeko chant!). People just aren’t going to join in with a chant like that over and over again. But they would “TBTITLAATW” as it’s a City chant.

it’s a cultural thing not a football thing. IMO well never get that ultra mentality at football. You’ll have it for 1-2% (made up stat) that way, but it’s not English, and it certainly isn’t the way football in this country wants us to move.

It doesn’t really belong to any country tbh that style of support originated in Italy and every country that’s adopted since put their own spin on it, don’t see why we can’t do the same. Even in Germany when the movement got started in the 90s it faced opposition like over here but over time u can see how strong the scene is now. Imo the reason it never took off in England is cos a big team hasn’t done it yet, u saw with the scousers with allez allez allez they started it now nearly every team has their own version and with Celtic and rangers they started their own groups and now a majority of Scottish teams have them and the mindset between us isn’t that much different at all

Exactly.

We need to change the mindset of our fans.

But we also need to change the mindset of the club.

The mindset of the club is changing, and they recognise that if they don’t change, the fans won’t change either.

Unfortunately people within football and outside of football are utterly determined to keep things the same in football and on the terraces as they are.

The megaphone is an utterly small start, but if we can keep it going, and if we can continue to attract fans to the idea bit by bit, we might be able to create a ‘proper singing section’ with a focal point in that singing section in the future?

I was in Italy last month and went to the Roma v AC Milan game and the Napoli v Atalanta match. The match day "Experience" is completely different animal to the Premier league. For starters, both the stadiums were half empty, so fans regardless of their booked seats, sat where they wanted. Stewarding was pretty much non existent inside both grounds, though getting in was pretty stringent, you needed photo ID. Once inside it was a free for all, where the Ultras pretty take over. You can smoke and drink beer in your seats and weed is openly smoked. It was a great experience, I loved watching groups of friends gathering together like WE used to on the terraces, It felt old school, raw and real!

Unfortunately, with the complete sanitisation of the game. Going to the Etihad especially the North stand, where I generally end up these days, feels more akin going to the cinema.

Any other ideas?

I appreciate your stance and derision, but have you got any suggestions or ideas that will improve the atmosphere at the Etihad, or are you just going to mock the fans that are trying to do exactly that, even if it means ‘trialing @megaphone’?

1894 are stood on the concourse at the back of block 115 at home games. Come over, introduce yourself and help us, even if it means waving a flag, dropping down a banner, or helping to set up a display before a match, etc. We could do with your support and help. Thanks.

Really wouldn’t mind if the prem dropped off in the next few years and the sponsers fucked off that’s the kind of match day experience I’d want everyday

Ur spot on the the mindset of the fans, I remember when u belted out the guardiola song on the megaphone lots responded with “what the f*ckin he’ll was that” although it was a bit of fun it really proved ur point, lot of fans are either too stubborn or just don’t understand.

Also to get more involved I think u should organise singing sections and that at the Academy/ women’s games at the a academy stadium, it would get more fans involved who aren’t necessary in the south stand for first team games like myself but who still want to get involved as it’s more easily accessible, it’s a good opportunity to organise and convince some to relocate for first team games for the future. I remember how good it was for the youth cup final against Chelsea in 2015, better than any atmosphere I’ve experienced at the etihad I felt like I was at a European game in the ultras section minus that annoying brass band, was pretty disappointed that there was no turnout from 1894 for this years final against Liverpool.

Yes agreed, its the mindset of fans. Once we change and put the miner things we mention in place we have a chance, but as it stands we look at to many reasons not to sing, and that's not guys on here, its the ones on the terraces with hand sin pockets or on mobiles.

First year or two at 1894 we gave the academy stadium a go for youth games / womens games. Like you say the first youth cup final game Vs Chelsea was quite good apart from the band. We then tried a womens game but nobody showed up, we tried the next two youth finals but even less turned up and the club gave free tickets out to schools in the end behind the goal. So we had a bad mix of fans that stewards didn't like and struggled controlling, we where made to feel a bit unwelcome. It went horribly and cringe worthy wrong so that ended that.

Big game Saturday so we will find our voices for this one. But no reason why we cant for all the games
