It doesn’t really belong to any country tbh that style of support originated in Italy and every country that’s adopted since put their own spin on it, don’t see why we can’t do the same. Even in Germany when the movement got started in the 90s it faced opposition like over here but over time u can see how strong the scene is now. Imo the reason it never took off in England is cos a big team hasn’t done it yet, u saw with the scousers with allez allez allez they started it now nearly every team has their own version and with Celtic and rangers they started their own groups and now a majority of Scottish teams have them and the mindset between us isn’t that much different at all

Doing it in the mid nineties vs now is very different. All the flags and banners do very little in improving an atmosphere, it may feel great for those that went to the time and effort (and huge kudos), but the rest of the stadium looks, says “oh wow look” whips out their phones and take a picture. Post it on whatever social media platforms they use and that’s that. The banners get put away and everyone forgets about them.

The main obstacle, IMO, in creating that “ultras” atmosphere is that no matter how many banners, flags, songs, drums, or megaphones are put into the stadium, you are demonstrating to the wrong people. The fans of football today of clubs like City now want to go to a game, buy some merchandise, tick the cliche of attending a game and buy a drink, a pie and/or burger, and sit in their seat whilst photographing the game. They’ll leave before half time, they’ll leave before FT as ultimately they’ll be over the result quicker than you can say bluemoon.

In order to change that mindset you need to change the people, to change the people you need to be able to influence the club and show them that earning less £££ and having a better atmosphere is the way forward - that can’t be done. Football is a business now, like it or not, we’re all ££££ to the entire footballing world. Until we can all stop paying, stop going and hit them in the pocket then nothing will change. Simply not enough people are willing to do that, same can be applied to any service/entertainment you pay for; Sky, Fuel, Netflix etc.

I turn up, and have done for 32 years now, every week, I sing, I shout and I enjoy the game. Would I prefer it if it were better atmosphere wise? Yeah of course. I bid you all good luck, and will look forward to the next banner whilst I look around looking at everyone taking pictures and posting on their favourite social media platform. Certain things lead to a special atmosphere that we cannot recreate. All IMO of course.

Defo agree we need to take the ultras route and I’m glad other people on this thread feel the same, the English style is dead and has been for a long time and it all seems a bit tinpot flicking V’s to the away end instead of singing. I can honestly say this without a hint of sarcasm that we could have one of the best atmosphere’s in Europe if we put our minds to it, the passion is defo there but it’s just not coming out the right way atm. The main problem is ground design, our ground was designed for a summer athletics competition. Grounds like OT and ours have roofs pointing up so most crowd noise goes up into space. Spurs designed there ground with atmosphere included. Old grounds had stands roofs that pointed downwards directing crowd noise onto the pitch, this helps generate noise at pitch level, this also had the effect of causing more people to get caught up in the atmosphere thus generating more noise. All the ultras in the world won't help on that score, they would all have to stand around admiring each others clothing during the long quite spells.

I thought you was going to say "flags & banners don't sing", had that said a few times. But I can tell you aren't the sort of guy to state the obvious like that. Just in case anybody wonders why the flags / banners / displays are there, its not to get fans to sing its a presence. Not that I want a full on ultras group but where the singing is good around Europe or union bears for example, the flags & displays are there, they do look good. Its probably easier to make a display work than it is to get fans to group and sing, you can control a display to a certain extent but cant control singing. There are more displays we would like to do that we haven't done before, got some very creative ideas, but shape of stands / security / fan involvement restrict us.

It would be great if season cards where £199 and included transport don't get me wrong, but I don't think we would see a big improvement in atmosphere, might help a little bit. There are enough good hardcore fans in that stadium to fill block 115 three or four times over and have a waiting list, but we are spread out. Some of the new fans are happy to be on phones rather than join in, its not down to age of fan either. We have to change our mindset, we have to group. The post from "squidward" towards the end of last week summed it up perfectly.

The old kippax generated more noise than any open ended ultra group could ever do. The kippax never needed anyone to climb up a post with a megaphone either. Not saying having ultra type end is wrong either, but there not as loud as you think these ultras just colourful, rowdy with nice flags and flares, ie they look good sometimes.

If it is possible for 500 Monaco fans to out sing 54,000 city fans then there are enough of the hardcore fans still left to make a difference.

Some match days the Kippax was great, other days it was quiet. A great period for atmosphere was when we used to play Leeds, Sunderland, Newcastle, the Sheffield’s and Chelsea in the old second division. Often the atmosphere was flat for top flight games when we weren’t playing the top teams or North West rivals.

For most of the 80s apart from a few games per season the atmosphere at Maine Road was dire (and at most other grounds). The stadium was half full most of the time. When we went down to the third tier things improved with the siege mentality. When the Etihad is at its best it is as good as Maine Road. It is easy to look back with rose tinted glasses and just remember the big games. Our away support has mostly been magnificent in terms of numbers and volume, especially when the team has been at its lowest.

Many European Ultras are extremely load, particularly the German and the Polish fans.

The problem that we're trying to address is how to make the Etihad as loud. Not a trivial thing to do as it requires a culture change. But we're not trying to do the impossible, European fans have shown that, they've set the bar so all we have to do is follow. English fans are by and large a miserable bunch and when you travel to European aways the contrast is really driven home. No reason why City can't lead the way in England on this.

I'm not sure romanticise is the right word. It was a dump. The bogs were angin.


The old Kippax was brilliant (for me) because you could stand wherever the fuck you wanted. Pay on the turnstile on the day. Was cheap as chips.

New singing safe standing section in the family stand. £20 for adults £10 for under 18 pay on the door. May need drum may not no microphone though. We play towards that end in the second half anyway so it will be like a proper home end.

The German and Polish fans are doing now what we did in the 70's early 80's, every ground was banging if the stakes were high.
