COVID-19 — Coronavirus

Those points are both addressed by the WHO doctor in the article. He does say that China has an advantage through being an authoritarian regime but most of what they did could be replicated if we wanted to.

And also the WHO has a lot of people on the ground in Wuhan and they're supporting the Chinese government figures.
Yes, I read the article and thought it was good in general, but think some of the assertions referenced in it are a tad disingenuous and overly optimistic, if not intentionally misleading. Not by the author, mind, but rather from entities quoted.

I think the assertion that “most” of what they have done could be replicated is quite an exaggeration, to be honest. It is not just that China have the benefit of an authoritarian regime (central, direct decision making), it is the level of population control (both de facto and de jure) and surveillance that was already in place prior to the outbreak (it’s much easier to ramp up than build from scratch in a crisis and there’s makes ours look feeble in comparison), as well as their capacity to scale solutions/restraints that set them well apart, along with a few other unique aspects like geography, population distribution, and timing with political cycles.

And WHO is indeed in China, and are supporting much of the data being released, but they are there under negotiated terms of entry and I think it would be naive — given other instances of this sort of organisational presence being granted in the past (I am familiar with a few situations with MSF, for instance) — that there is no information filtering being carried out, when it has been the case many times in the past. I have actually had to deal with inaccurate information release whilst working for MSF due to such filtering.

It really is not likely that most other developed nations could successfully implement similar containment and mitigation measures to what China has done, for better or worse.

You're discussing with domalino, the rest of us know you're wrong...........

Curious to see if China ups the ante on cracking down on illegal wet markets after all this. It's not only murdered their own economy but also other developed economies.

(Yes, I've been watching that Vox video on Youtube)

Yes they should be made to pay reparation costs to the world and for being mainly responsible for putting most animals on the endangered species list with their penchant for tiger penis flavored Pot noodles... seriously though they need to get their shit together on these matters and stop killing and eating anything that bloody moves

Perhaps if we declared martial law and had troops patrolling the streets. But then again in this daft society we live in, some idiot would probably challenge it in the courts, and get the government to foot the legal bill to sue itself.

UK seems to be matching the rest of outside of china for speed increases.

A second person in the UK has died from coronavirus, Sky News understands.

The man was understood to be in his late 80s, had underlying health conditions and died at Milton Keynes Hospital.

Doctors are awaiting official test results to confirm if it was a case of COVID-19

Other patients on the ward were isolated this morning while a deep clean was carried out, Milton Keynes Citizen reported.

Hospital staff who nursed the patient are also said to have gone into isolation

A detailed contact tracing exercise is now being conducted to trace anyone who came into contact with him in the days before his death.

Forty-seven new coronavirus cases have been confirmed in the UK over the past 24 hours taking the total to 163

Mr Johnson visited a research laboratory in Bedfordshire on Friday to meet scientists working on ways to diagnose those suffering from COVID-19, the disease that develops from coronavirus, much faster.

The new government cash, which will also be spent on helping to develop a vaccine, is coming from the UK's multi-billion pound foreign aid budget

However, it comes after the government's chief scientific adviser claimed a working coronavirus vaccine would not be produced in time for the current outbreak.

"I don't think we will get the vaccine for this outbreak," Sir Patrick Vallance told the BBC.

"I don't think we'll get something in time or at scale for this outbreak.

You’ve illustrated one of the reasons we couldn’t successfully implement the same measures, even if we (illegally) suspended many current laws under the guise of crisis.

Not to mention many never want to do anything until they are told they *can’t* do it. You’ll have people that haven’t left their parent’s basement in months roaming the streets as soon as they’re told they can’t leave their homes. ;-)

Looks like we might have two doubles in the space of 4 days. I was going off it being one doubling every 3 days, but this is already quite an acceleration.

Karen, no offence, but this was breaking about 5 hours ago.

What are you lot seeing/hearing/thinking about the FA cancelling matches or playing them without fans? My son and I are headed out the first full week of April for a number of fixtures among several sides -- I hope. I've read up a bit but having a hard time keeping tabs on everything -- I work the stock market here in the USA and it has been a freaking shitshow for two weeks.
