The government knows this will spike, their objective is that when the highest % of population are infectious, they will only be able to infect a lower number of new cases, as prior to the spike, a % of population will have already have had it and be immune [ if its true they will be immune as noone really knows for sure]. Prior to the spike, the support services will be dealing with lower numbers of cases each week, as of course numbers will be lower than the spike numbers, during this earlier phase. If they try to stop as many as people as possible catching it at an earlier stage then the graph will have lower numbers before the spike but the spike will be far far higher. So they believe workplaces, economy will not have dramatic collapse when spike comes and NHS would less likely be to totally swamped during spike.So, government wants 30% plus of the population to get it quickly as majority of those will be generally younger/fit/healthy, only having mild symptoms. Then when 40% are infectious, they can only pass it on to smaller % of the population. The 40% then in self isolation can have their work covered by the 30% who are immune. They are not particularly bothered about the groups that arent fit younger generally healthy. They will die before the spike as government wants people to catch it earlier & they will also die in the spike as not enough resources for all.

Treatment will be limited for only younger/fit/healthy. In reality, every year, the elderly and those with underlying conditions die from complications after contracting flu.The only difference with flu to this, is normally each year there is a flu jab, which works in varying degrees each year to try to help people in this group. There is no vaccine for this currently, so greater % of this group will die, as greater % of this group will contract it and resources will be far more limited to those in place for normal winter flu.

Thats why Boris had to include his,"many loved ones will die before their time", in his statement. He didnt want to say that to British Public, but he knows their strategy will kill a far greater % of that sector than others who they want to protect moreso, so hes covered himself. Some will say that the planet needs hefty % of its population wiped out thru meteorite strike/nuclear war/illness. A viral pandemic would be a more environmentally long term beneficial event..

There are also whispers the figures are not on the level but overridingly is what you note. Their solution is not really a solution when you take a closer look. A temporary fix it would seem.

Especially with the attitude of the Chnese in general, namely their selfish self absorbed arrogant streak. Can you catch this and it not feel as bad as it can be ? By that I mean after Wembley on the way home I felt really unwell on the train, went straight to bed and stayed there for about 5 days. I would say I had about 80% of the symptoms. Didnt have a runny nose or sneezing.
I put it down to a bad cold perhaps flu. Still have a slight cough and feel abit tied still...

yup, forget waiting for the numbers of reported infections to come in as they will become more and more meaningless, the government has indirectly told people that unless your a celebrity or politician to stay at home and ride this one out and cross your fingers.

The celebrities, politicians and footballers are not being treated though. They are ‘staying at home and riding this one out’, which is exactly what they’re telling you.

I think it likely that they will have a testable treatment, if not a vaccine, and probably several options.

China appears to be a perfect regime to live-test it in a way that would be unthinkable in the UK.

It’s an important point as it proves some people only believe the experts when it suits.

The guy you dismissed on QT is also an expert. There are many experts expressing disbelief at our Government's approach.

Speaking for myself, I do not trust this Government but they may be right in their approach, I am not qualified to judge, time will tell.

However, for the Government course to be the correct one a lot of experts are going to be wrong.

It’s looking like a reasonable figure to expect, no? They have announced today we need at least 60% to get it for herd immunity. We are looking at 400k-550k deaths if the rate is around 1%. Obviously that rate may change over the coming weeks and months, but it won’t be far off.

They have said this is coming back every single year from now on as a seasonal disease, so we need herd immunity. So yes, they are sacrificing some of the elderly now to protect more in the long run.

I feel comforted that the death from the virus of myself and my wife will not have been in vain. Will we get posthumous medals ?

It would be a lot easier to simply accept it if the actions they are taking were not so strikingly at odds with those of all other major countries.

Are we blindly to accept that our lot are correct and everyone else's experts are necessarily wrong because they are not British?

This is what I don't get with folk, our scientist can't be questioned they are right 100% and we should back them, Where as near enough most other countries scientists are doing the opposite.

What I observed watching Johnson yesterday imo, was a man who looked shell shocked and who had been briefed and told of the 'real' numbers and potential impact on the UK as a whole. We are all without doubt forever suspicious of our politicians, this guy more than any for me, but as I watched him it felt like to me and yes have a dig if you wish, he was a rabbit in the headlights, there was something more he didn't or wouldn't say along with the scientist and head of PHE. I hope to god I'm wrong.

Where are you getting this nonsense from.

The 'nonsense' is all around...when a PM comes on TV backed by his 'experts' tells the nation to be prepared for the loss of loved ones...he and they have not much of an idea of how to deal with the thing that is in our midst that would save individual lives. That the only thing to do and what they've decided upon is to allow the virus to make it's hit where it does, in the hope that lots will survive and thus create a band of immunity for the future. The greater good theory...sacrifice the few for the sake of the many and just pay lip service to everything else. But if you think that's 'nonsense' of course, then that's your opinion and you are quite entitled to it, as I think I have too, whatever the 'nonsense' I may base it upon.
