I’m going to explain Boris’s method for anybody who doesn’t quite get it. I’m not saying if I agree with his plan or not but here goes

His plan is to segregate all vulnerable people (older, ill and at risk) let’s call this group A

Anyone looking after the older, ill and at risk can be group B

The general population generally healthy can be group C

Group C needs to go about its business keeping the country moving kids at school us at work

Group B looks after group A and avoids contact with C

Group C is allowed to contract the virus and because it’s generally healthy it can cope with it better than group A

Group A and B are almost self isolating without the virus to avoid putting strain on the NHS and reducing the risk of getting the virus and then needing the NHS

Group C (the generally healthy) go through the cycle of contracting the virus self isolating and being looked after by healthy family members, friends and the local community
Anyone who has complications gets looked after by the NHS while groups A and B are kept away The NHS are not strained by A and B while it's looking after complicated cases in C

As group C comes full circle and recovers it divides in to groups that take group B’s position looking after group A allowing group B to go though the cycle

With B and C though the cycle
A is free to have NHS to itself because B and C are now clear from illness and infection and hopefully have a degree of immunity from getting it again this season.

Hope this helps

from the BBC regarding Italy.

Italy death toll jumps, but rate of infections slows

The latest figures from Italy, Europe's worst-hit country, report a further 345 deaths in the past 24 hours. It's an increase of 16%.
The virus has now killed 2,503 people there - 2,060 people are in intensive care, from among a total of 31,506 cases, up from 27,980. However, this was the slowest rate of increase since Italy identified the presence of the virus.

Once the isolation measures come into force it will turn around. It has to.
Of course if everyone is isolated then it will come down but unless you go to every single person and test them to make sure they are free of it then as soon as they come out they could start infecting again.

Well put that think you wud confuse boris tho

Testing strategy could depend on your lab capacity.

Germany can test 160,000 per week. President of Berlin's Robert-Koch-Institute, advising the gov,
said we have to use test capacity strategically and in a consequent way to take test results for statistic use
in order to assess where we are right now on the curve.

I have no specific details though.
thanks for the response. From the Guardian tonight:

Why are people with symptoms not being tested?

It appears to be a capacity issue, although the Department of Health and Social Care failed to respond to repeated requests for explanation. So far there have been about 44,000 tests in England, which the government’s chief scientific adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance, told the health select committee put it in “the top three or four countries in terms of testing”. PHE has a capacity of about 4,000 tests per day, he said, although last week NHS England put out a press release saying it was scaling up to 10,000 a day. Vallance said 4,000 a day “is clearly not going to be enough going forward” and said there was “a very big effort going on to try and ramp that up”.

another question to answer. How the hell can we be so far behind the curve on this. How can we be the 'top three or four' countries for testing when we have basically stopped testing anyone that isnt in hospital.
I was listening to James Obrien today and caller after caller from our NHS was saying they have symptoms but could be flu, or a cold and they are following advice and staying at home. Surely at least NHS staff should be getting tested.

£330bn for the economy in various different ways. Kept pledging if that’s not enough then they will be more.

People still going to the pub.

Laura Ashley closing.

They were the main points I’ve taken away so far today, not necessarily in that order..
Cheers — I was just reading up on the support proposal; nice of the government to fashion a fairly comprehensive (initial) economic response.

More will be needed, but I won’t bring work and doom/gloom on to here tonight. After the day I have had (seeing the numbers being projected) I am looking for some escapism.

Saw that earlier. Hope it works.

Another positive data point from Italy (I am sorry, it sounds callous to call another 345 deaths, "positive"). There would seem to be a continuing downward trend in the percentage daily rise in deaths:

If this continues, it's definitely slowing
Are there other measures too to show a slowing down? Hopefully it’s the case. In theory, they could have 345 deaths every day for eternity and that curve would keep going down and converge to just above zero. Europe needs the boost of seeing Italy get things under relative control.

That isn’t his plan though. That’s a mix up of last weeks and this weeks plan. We don’t want anywhere near most of group c getting it.

Edit: I’ve just seen that’s been knocking around for a few days. Definitely don’t follow that as then you get group c thinking they can still do things like going to pubs.

Apologies if asked before and without making any political point whatsoever - because I have no interest in that - why are Beijing getting upset with Trump calling it the Chinese virus - is that not where it originated?- appreciate its a global pandemic and all that

Well we have to beat it first but I am pretty sure like you that it will come back again. But 2nd time around we will know exactly what to do and everyone in the health service will know what to look for and will have tests in place and they will chase up every single contact.
