COVID-19 — Coronavirus

I’ve been looking at this issue closely as it’s naturally critical and as it underpins the strategy of the herd immunity idea. Copied the below on the latest from CNN experts from today Which casts doubt in my mind if once infected you would be safe to renter the workforce safely :-

Q. After recovering from coronavirus, does the recovered patient have immunity to the virus?

It’s too early to know for sure. But other coronaviruses, like ones that cause the common cold, might give us clues.

With “common cold coronaviruses, you don’t actually have immunity that lasts for very long, and so we don’t know the answer with this specific coronavirus,” said Dr. Celine Gounder, a professor of medicine and infectious diseases at the New York University School of Medicine.

“That’s actually going to be one of the challenges with designing a vaccine is how do you actually cause the immunity to last long enough to protect you.”
This is where i am,i have no idea if i am immune now so i can't go next door and give ny elderly neighbour a hug and she really needs one badly

Maybe if you shouted at her through the wall 'I'M HUGGING YOU!'

Better do it for a few hours to be on the safe side.

If Londoners think that their transport system is under-funded they should try the shit show up north.

I'm not sure many do really. Bits need improving, but I don't think there's anything significant as clear improvements have happened.

The tweeted picture was because services have been cut down, making the trains fuller at a time when people are meant to be trying to keep a distance.

It still has to have widespread safety trials on 1,000's of patients, the first person has had a dose that is all
Are we talking about the same trial? I'm not talking about the one in Seattle, I'm talking about the Oxford vaccine.

There's clearly a lot going on. About 30 vaccines. The talk was they would take 12-8 months, but it seems that before they get to full roll-out they will if things go well be available.

My mums been on the phone in tears. My 77 year old mum with COPD and tons of health issues that this could kill her with, who lives on here own, with no good neighbours, and has falls, and in me and my sisters opinion has early dementia - she's meant to live alone and not see us for a year they're now saying.. I'd move in, i want to be with her, but i can't uproot my 3 year old from all he's known, plus we could bring it in with us each day over the next 12 months, plus i'm planning on self isolating for the next 12 weeks as i too have a weakended immune system - do i have to now stay in for a year? To get outside we have to walk along an open but thin long outside landing of flats passing right next to all the freaks who live in this block who aren't bothering to follow the distancing and isolation rules, so i don't feel i can even get any air. And my son, he's staying in for 12 weeks... he's already asking when the storm is over so he can go out. How can this be a year without me coming face to face with my mum, she will rot away, what little there is left of her will not be there when this is all over.
I'm in pieces. And my partner working from hom is making us kill each other, he's a shit. I just can't live.
It’s 12 months of social distancing: 2metres away from each other, no touching, washing hands regularly, isolating if you show symptoms... not 12 months of lockdown!

Yes, lots of proponents of the herd immunity strategy (which I am not dismissing out of hand) have remained quiet when this issue is brought up. Naturally nobody knows too well at this stage what level of immunity we have and for what time frame and I would assume that scientists are analysing this as we speak with recovered patients but surely if this is a fundamental requirement for that strategy to work it needs to be discussed in greater detail; otherwise the UK are pursuing a policy with no guaranty that it actually works versus lockdown/heavy shutdown which at least we know does work (for the short term at least).

Other posters are also suggesting that you can go back to work once you have antibodies - not sure that's going to catch on without some science behind it.

This COVID-19 thing;
2 metres apart
No Hugging
No Kissing
No Social Interaction

It's like being married with a cough.

The bigger players in the hospitality sector are getting more than a little pissed off now.

I think sector lockdown for this is going to come today or tomorrow.

I know a few people in the game and they have been told their companies are ‘preparing for closure within 48 hours’.

This should have happened days ago.

I have a sneaky feeling the government are going to try and get past Mother’s Day. I.e one last big earner

Some silly cow on Twitter was going on at me for having fell for all the ‘scaremongering’. She said 95% of people recover. It seems to be lost on her that using her own numbers 5% of people don’t!

A 5% mortality rate of a highly infectious virus will catastrophic. That’s before you get into those that recover but need hospital treatment - it’s not scaremongering, it’s just maths and paying attention. 10 days ago this women didn’t think it would effect football!
I blame Maths teachers. She clearly doesn’t understand the significance of 5% on a very large number.
Perhaps 5% is the amount of brain power she uses daily.
