Keir Starmer

Just checked his background, he was brought up in Oxted, a leafy Surrey town, in the top 20 wealth stakes.
A bit like Jezza then.

What other points? Champagne socialist? A shit term that basically means you can’t be a socialist unless you are poor. Meaningless.

London based. Well, they have to live somewhere. If he engages and resonates with people outside London, where he lives is immaterial.

You’re probably out of touch with Labour’s working class and as such aren’t in the best position to judge whether someone else is also out of touch.

This is going to sound radical, but I’m going to reserve judgement on him and see what he does and how he resonates with the public. I’ll then start make my mind up on traits such his effectiveness, leadership and charisma.

Probably the most competent of the candidates in my (Tory tinted) view. it will be interesting to see if he can purge the party of the loony left and therefore offer a credible opposition.

He's the son of a nurse and a tool maker, went to a state grammar school and was the first person in his family to go to university.

If you think he's part of the elite because he got brought up in Surrey, you're a moron.

Haha, there you go again Alan. Saying that I'm out of touch with working class. Guessing wrongly again. Both sides of my family grew up in council houses as hard working staunch labour voters. I guess you didn't know that did you. You just like pigeon holing people. My vote would have gone to Nandy in case you are wondering.

His father worked in a factory as a toolmaker. I spent a few years travelling to that neck of the woods on a weekly basis and not everyone who lives in these places is wealthy. There is council housing in many places.

Tough tough job to take on.

He will need two or three, at least, very strong wingpersons to pull that shambles of a party together.

The country needs a strong opposition to the government, whatever parties they are at any one time.

He'll have done well if he gets Labour to within a credible striking distance of Tories @ next election.

Edit: very well.........

So did Keir, but he’s a champagne socialist, whilst you seem more of an Eton mess.

weird how people shouldn’t be judged on how they were brought up.

You wouldn’t have voted labour with any of the choices put forward, so they haven’t lost a vote.

This seems bizarre to say, but Brexit isn’t going to be at the forefront of peoples’ minds for quite some time.

Whoever they appointed couldn’t be as socialist as Boris is currently forced to be.

People might cotton on to the fact that socialist policies have to form part of any government’s ideology and be more accepting of a few more once this pandemic finishes.

Any fair and successful society needs a mixture of capitalism with a hint of socialism.

There needs to be a safety net for people.

It’ll be interesting to see his policies, they’ve definitely chosen the right candidate there.

Who does his voice remind people of? I am getting the name harold wilson for some reason

Who knows what the landscape will be like by the next election, nobody thought the working class would vote for boris so it is daft to write him off,i am glad to have someone normal at the helm

Absolutely. Capitalism is important, but we need the heads of the corporations to be more philanthropic rather than Uber cunts like Bezos and Branson.

One of weakest DPPs of recent times according to some of his Labour colleagues. Also denounced as spineless and susceptible to pressure as shadow Brexit minister by the same group. Anybody is an upgrade on Corbyn and he must improve our electoral prospects to some extent a least .

I’m content with any economic policy in between the latest Tory manifesto (ignoring the pandemic that’s seen it go out the window) and Ed Miliband’s.

I actually voted for Miliband and quite liked him.

My economic views have always hovered around the centre ground, I’d maybe be right of centre if I was in power.

It’s social views where I differ from the majority.
