Friction and division growing at Premier League clubs over the signing of individual coronavirus agreement forms
Legal concerns have been sparked with several players concerned about where they would be left if they were to test positive for the virus
Some Premier League dressing rooms are facing growing friction amid divisions over whether to sign individual coronavirus agreement forms.
Players and staff are being asked to sign what amounts to a code of practice confirming they understand and agree to their club’s Covid-19 protocols
as part of 'Project Restart'.
But tensions are rising in a number of top-flight dressing rooms between players who have indicated a willingness to sign up to the measures and those who are reluctant or opposed to doing so.
Club and Premier League sources have insisted the documents are not liability waivers and form part of the guidelines aimed at heightening awareness about and protection against the pandemic.
But they have still sparked legal concerns with significant numbers of players concerned about where they would be left if they were to test positive for the virus.
It is understood there are players who have already sought legal advice and, in some cases, been advised not to sign the form.
One dressing room source at a Premier League club told
Telegraph Sport: “There are splits of opinion among players about the form
and it’s causing tensions.”
A dressing room source at another top-flight club added: “Whether it’s legitimate or not, there’s a mistrust about that form. Some players are happy to sign it but that’s a big issue for those who are not. It’s risking splits.”
Captains and Professional Football Association (PFA) representatives from the 20 Premier League clubs are due to hold talks via videolink on Wednesday with issues around the form likely to be one of the subjects under discussion as footballers brace themselves for testing and a return to full training.
There are many players keen to try to finish the season if it is deemed safe to do so but anxieties appear to be the greatest among those with vulnerable wives, children and relatives, out-of-contract players, and those from the black, Asian, and ethnic minority community
given that the statistics around the virus show increased risks for black men and women.
