Yeah, him moaning about Rhodes when taking Rhodes cash for a scholarship is hypocrisy beyond belief. How many Jews would take a Hitler scholarship?

Then there is no need for a statue that venerates and glorifies. Just put the money to good use and fuck him off. History goes full circle as it where since taking the money and fucking people off is pretty much what Rhodes did.

Yes, Slaves were sold and 'collected' by African agents. Dunno about the Arab question.

The Colosseum was ransacked.
All the marble stolen.
Most by the Catholic Church. I believe a lot of it is in the Vatican.
 
I've only taken the time to speak to one actual black person about the statue thing. The impression I got was it is the ignorance of our shady past and who/what the statue were that is offensive rather than the statues themselves. It seems to me that black people would rather school curriculums changed to reflect black history and Britain's less glorious past than to engage in a stalinist purge of monuments.
At present we have a load of faux liberals vandalising statues to signal their own virtue. The gesture has admittedly raised an issue and educated us about key figures, but actually has no long term effect. It will be forgotten as soon as the ripples in the water in Bristol harbour calm down.

But people are now talking a lot more about how we can revise the way we remember and memorialise these slavers. All it took was one shitty statue to be taken down.

Some people on here seem to have a weird emotional attachment to these statues of slavers.

I think the underlined part is the significant part for the discussion, and has to be on a person by person basis.

Churchill we know had what nowadays would be reprehensible views. The statues are for what he did during WW2 though. There needs to be a grown-up discussion with fair representation for all views.

Someone yesterday wanted to have a go at Nelson's column because he didn't condemn slavery - that seemed a bit of a stretch.

Not sure why the Peel statue is considered offensive though.
 
When the top trend is people wishing Prince Philip happy birthday a literal living statue(or fossil) that espouses racist opinion then you know at some level we are far from accepting we tolerate racism

I never get why people don’t do more of this, I love seeing statues or plaques and learning about new things or people I’ve never heard of before. Suppose too many just walk with their heads in their phones totally oblivious to what’s around them.

I don’t think wishing Prince Philip a happy birthday is where BLM need to be focusing energy.

Fair enough but if there’s a list of wrongs, thats got to be either at the bottom or not on the list at all.

It needs to be reasonable or people will lose interest in the cause for equality.
