It's pointless arguing with him BJL - managers and players have talked about teams raising their game for as long as I've been a football fan but because I used it as the reason for Celtic getting a very good and well deserved draw against City, they must all be wrong.

Wrexham were better than Arsenal, Wigan were better than City despite going down that season, Inverness Caledonian Thistle were better than Celtic and clearly Rangers are better than Celtic because they beat them in the last derby. The concept that any of these teams raised their game to take on superior opponents is, using his own word, bullshit.

Caley Thistle are better than Celtic to be fair my favourite Scottish team by far thanks to watching that game as a kid.

Raising your game literally means improving your performance, just because some people raise it to a level they didn't know they had previously doesn't mean they weren't capable of it.

Fuck's sake I'm starting to sympathise with fucking Rangers fans and they sing Tina fucking Turner.

Great, they need all the sympathy they can get. I'm sure it will help them raise their game.

With due respect to the banter on this topic and to all those ‘bantering’; field & track athletes, tennis players, cyclists, boxers et al all train to peak maybe once every 6 to 8 weeks at most because they can’t maintain their peak athletic effort over a long period.

We’re all familiar with the fact that they train ‘up’ for big events.
This is a no brainier and well understood so I’m perplexed as to why anyone would think that a team of football players, or indeed a squad, doesn’t manage their training load to hit their best at certain times in the season and / or for certain games. Footballers are athletes and like other athletes they can’t be at peak fitness too often or for too long.
To add more weight to this, pretty damn obvious explanation of why it’s true that teams raise their games, I should be noted that teams rotate rotate players so that they are more effective in certain games. If players / teams couldn’t raise their performance for particular games then managers wouldn’t need to adjust their teams, as example by resting better players for certain big games.

I totally agree that the way a team may look to perform (especially to those who presume open football to mean players are playing better) is heavily influenced by whether the opposition camp in their box or attack like berserkers, but it is nevertheless true that squads / teams train to peak for certain games and for certain periods in the season.
Life’s about making the most out of what you’ve been dealt. Just like me or you, they can’t play their best hand every week. It’s simply not possible.

I often daydream about being in Dundee, bumping into Lorraine Kelly and having a laugh and a few drinks with her before deciding that the pair of us should go to Tannadice to watch the Tangerines. They win, the drinking continues, we have a bite to eat post match. We go to a bar and probably go a bit too far with the alcohol. Lorraine asks “Shall we be naughty and go back to my place?”

Within seconds of being through the door, she’s all over me like a rash. It’s obvious that I’m not leaving until the morning and she’s not going to sleep anytime soon. It becomes quite clear that this is the type of night where I need to raise my game.

Dunno about your game, sounds like there's only one particular thing you need to raise in that scenario.

She was a pal of my brother. Send me a photo of yourself and I will see if she fancies you. Same deal here though, if you don't have it in you, you won't be able to make it memorable. No matter how much you hope.

I’m not falling for that old chestnut. I refuse to be the subject of your self-pollution.

he'll only mark you down as you haven't raised your game.

I would need to interview past partners and ask what level his game was before I made any judgement about was he performing to his innate ability. It's all very science driven..

That could cause a huge amount of upset, trauma and unnecessary heart ache if one of their partners realised what had gone on whilst he was away with the army that summer. I'd rather you didn't.

My silence can be bought. I'm an unscrupulous ****.

I don't buy tops any more. Haven't since Seville. That looks ok though. If you buy tops. Which I don't. But if you did...... Not that I'm saying there's anything wrong with a middle aged man buying a top, or wearing it on holiday, or into town on a Saturday so people know who you support. I'm not saying that's naff, or am I ? :)
What if someone doesn’t get to go as much as they’d like anymore because of life circumstances, but they like to watch on telly with their lads and wear the shirt to get in the mood? Not saying that’s me, or am I?

Anyway. I think both Celtic shirts so far as smart. There. I’ve said something positive about your club now. I can get back to calling Scott Brown a ****.
