Watched a great documentary about the Everton team that won titles in the 80's this morning on Sky, Howard's Way. Had Sheedy, Ratcliffe, Steven, Richardson, Bailey, Gray, Reid, Southall, Pat van den Heuw(?) Talking about that era. Jesus Bailey has aged!
Some good stories and esp the one where the Binman as they called him, used to have the players take shots at him in ne . He would have his hands behind his back and make the saves with his head diving every which way. In my book he was definitely the world no 1.
Then they inevitably came to the part which ended that great side, the H word. Southall said that this side was the best in europe, and would have been the best in europe for 5 years at least. He never got the chance to confirm that. Tbf he was magnanimous about the reasons why, but I got the sense it was through gritted teeth. You cant blame the club he said. But the stadium was decrepit and the police and stewards should have performed better. Maybe so I thought to myself, but they were put into an impossible position by the actions of the fans. It was their behaviour on that night which drove the events and repercussions for all.
I think the reaction that said the most came from Pat van den Heuw. He couldn't even talk about it. He was visibly getting upset as he said he disnt like to discuss it. Now I may have read him wrong but I got the impression that his reaction was driven by the huge sense of disappointment of that team not being able to show the whole of europe that they were the best.
