Houssem Aouar

The entire country of France including Lyon's entire fanbase thought he was their best player.
L'Equipe in particular gave him the highest rating of the whole game.
So does whoscored who rated him higher than any of their other player on the night.
De Bruyne was asked to pick one player who impressed him in Lyon's team and went for Aouar without second thought.

He's not a cog in the wheel, he's been carrying this team since groupstage and is already tied for most assist in the tournament even though Bayern are scoring 5+ goals per game on average
THey can think what they like but 9 times out of 10 City would win that game. We've been terrorised by teams from France before eg Monaco but this Lyon side were comparatively ordinary and rode their luck.

I think we need a defensive midfielder and I'd go for Luiz. I think he's done really well in a very poor Villa side and he was their key player. I'd go for him at the base of our midfield.

Rodri will be at the base of our midfield for many years to come it's just getting the right balance in front and auror alongside kdb looks good if Luiz is to come back next season it will be as back up

Luiz in Zinchenko out? think that would be a squad upgrade.

Id def have Luiz back from what Ive seen....Think he would push Rodri - he has a bit more athleticism like Dihno in his prime (not sure he is as good as using the ball as Rodri is however - so its that balance again - A hybrid of the two would be perfect)

I’d take Luiz back just to fuck them up, gobbiest cunts ever at Wembley. Plus on a more rational front he is a very decent player, and would improve a lot under Pep

Aouar is a luxury player, we need a combative warrior type player in this team. Pep's signings weakened the spine of this team, All that's left of Mancini's warriors is Kun and when he leaves we would be left with Kdb and dinho, the only 2 warriors from Pellegrini's time here. Enough with the midget sized, fleet footed midfielders, we need players like Partey. Dinho is done and instead we prioritize Aouar? We should be getting rid of the softies like Gundogan and Mahrez, instead we are trying to bring in more softies? Pep's only warrior signing was Sane and he didn't seem to keen on using Sane to his full potential. I really don't get it!

Absolutely baffled by the continuing links to this guy. We don't have room in the squad for another central midfield player - especially one who is neither defensively a machine nor offensively a machine. Auoer is a younger version of Gundo and we have Gundo.

It's telling that the only place that we're linked with him is in the French press.

Oh and also City themselves briefed categorically just a few days ago they will not be buying a CM this window.

It’s not ‘rubbish’ simply a different opinion. He’s faster upstairs and faster at keeping the ball away from others, which is why they were consistently compelled to bring him down; he doesn’t have to be a sprinter to be fast. He was also instrumental in both their second and third goals, so hardly disappearing. In terms of squad position, Silva has already left so Aouar would take his slot.

I don’t base my judgement on liking particular players. Instead, I look at them and think do they have the technical ability we require? Would they fit our style of play and are they of the right age and experience to play in our squad? Similarly, do they have the right character? If we do sign Aouar and Koulibaly, I’ll be satisfied that the club has signed players and people that fit with what it has and what it needs now.

He isn't Walker fast, but he's faster than our midfield except maybe Foden & his reactions appear faster than most, too, by comparison.

If there is someone else better, then fine, but he looks an asset to me.

A genuine, quick, strong def mid would then have us set up for some years to come.

Think we’re singing from the same hymn sheet.

Once we perm him with Foden, Bernardo, and de Bruyne pressing, the comparative slowness and lack of intensity in Aguero/Gundogan will become more apparent, and the cry for more mobility at both ends will get louder.

Sorry but that is rubbish i can understand people liking Auoar but as i said 6 fouls in the first 36 minutes which he made the most of, and one a dive, you keep suggesting he is fast he is not, Gundogan was the one that fouled him the most, our slowest player, you even used our second slowest player as an example, after 36 minutes Lyon went into defensive mode and Aouar was hardly seen again, the big CB for Lyon was undoubtedly the best player on the park followed by the right winger and striker,
I can understand everybody liking Auoar he reminds me of Nasri but there remains 2 questions, who can you get to leave for him?, and does he cover a position we need better than others out there, the answer to the second part is very definitely no.
He's the ideal replacement for Gundogan.

In fact, he's the player Pep thinks Gundogan is in his head.

Spot on. I wouldn't sign him to take what we see as Foden's position in the team (albeit I think Pep will continue to use Foden as a wide player more often than not because of his pace and intensity off the ball), I would be using him as our number 6. Energy in a deeper position, and threading the balls through to our wide players and De Bruyne. Gundogan is excellent at doing that job, but needs a free role to perform it because he hasn't got the legs or strength to put in the defensive work. That's why Rodri is left with so much to do.

I wonder if Ake might be deployed in a defensive midfield/destroyer role more than we think. I gather he has played there on occasion in the past

One of his Bournemouth team mates suggested it when discussing the transfer. Said he does it in training & Aké also 'fancies himself' in that position.

Pep's going to use Foden as a DM.
