I think his statement is pretty self evident. He’s saying he’s done at Barca and Barto has reneged on his word....but he’ll stay rather than damage his legacy in a court battle....nowt wrong with that imo.

I said it yesterday and im still of the same opinion that this is a clever play. Barça now have to piss or get off the pot.....pony up his salary, image rights, loyalty bonus....or sell and try and use the cash to pay their debts and begin a rebuild......a no brainer for me.

I agree with you but I felt the interview today more or less implied that. I was someone who as soon as we were being linked to him said it will never happen but I have surprised by how far he did go to try and leave releasing his contract, not turning up to training, today confirming that he wants to go etc. I am surprised at the backlash against him on here. Who could have known that Bartameu would be prepared to let Barca lose money over his pride? It says it all when no one can make any sense of Bartameu stance. It surely became clear to Messi then that the man is a fool who cannot be reasoned with.

Reports are already circulating about us signing a pre-contract agreement with Messi in January... surely a significant fee this summer would be a better result for Barca, those reports might just help with that narrative!
 
Tolmie thanks for the info as always. I enjoy reading the posts. Just to echo your last post. I don’t think this is done.

Messi did try to leave and the info solid but can’t help feeling disappointed to have come so close.

One of the few posters I read with interest. Always intelligent well thought out posts from TH. Hope it continues.
 
He will sign an extension once Bartomeu leaves. To be honest it was now or never for him. At 34 would it viable to get one year (max two) out of him for such a fee. We should be looking at a Norwegian rising star instead next summer.

Would have been better for us ;) Maybe he’s just waiting for the next phase to play out, ball’s in their court now.
 
Watching the whole interview, I don’t see how that’s him putting pressure on the board to allow him to go or inviting city to make a bid or anything of that nature that gives hope this can still happen this summer. His tone seemed very definitive to me it was one of an acceptance he will have to stay for another year. He and his dad/lawyers etc will have made sure his words were very deliberate, there were different ways of saying things if he still thought he could get out this month.

If we were able to stick a contract in front of him now for 12 months time I suspect he would sign it but January is a long time away in football terms Bartomeu will surely be out of the club before then, maybe he gets along with the new guy, maybe he likes Koeman and his ideas and sees some sparks of life in a fastly declining side. It’s going to be a very annoying wait to see how this plays out, still a very real chance we will get to see Messi in a City shirt, just a little longer than we had hoped.

Whether this was done with other motives we can't be sure. But I reckon Khaldoun etc will not be amused.
In addition if he were to sign a pre contract in January the rest of the season will all be about his arrival rather than the team.

He hasnt pulled the plug ...he is bring forced to stay ahainst his wishes at present
 
Given what you saw last season, anyone think our squad is capable of winning the league and champs league if we now just add Koulibaly?

Obviously along with Ake and Torres.

Can't put my finger on it but something seems missing before I'd be fully confident we could win both.

I think we can win the title definitely, Liverpool can't get that lucky again with injuries. Hopefully if Koulibaly signs he will make a huge difference also really excited to see Ake and Torres. The midfield area has been a problem trying to find the right balance hopefully we get to see more of Foden and Bernardo in a central area we lack legs in their.
We are still one or two players short to compete in all competitions.
