The issue is that Pep plays both together and to date I can’t think of a big game where that has ended in a good performance or result.

This is not a defence of their starting together, just wanted to point out that they both started in the recent 4-0 against Liverpool and both games against Real.

If that’s your viewpoint then there is no doubt Gundog is a key member of the squad, no blind spot required, in my opinion.

A damning statistic. Gundogun started in 13 of 15 defeats I counted since around Oct. and Rodri and gundogun were paired together in 10 of those
How many did Ederson start? Coz I've been wondering about him.

Indeed. That can't be put down to just bad luck. When Gundogan starts for us in general we struggle as he sucks the life out of the team by slowing the game down.

Gundogan is a quality player. The problem is not Gundogan but that Fernandinho grew old and Rodri lacked the mobility to do what Fernandinho did.

Sterling started in every loss this season. Rodri, Ederson, Fernandinho, and Walker started in the same amount of losses as Gundogan. Laporte started in every loss post lockdown when fit and Aguero started in more losses than Gundogan pre lockdown when fit too.

Possibly true but as meathunter says no one can argue that sterling, Laporte, aguero, Walker or ederson slow the tempo down and suck the life out of city unlike gundogun. This must be obvious to anyone watching city

So why post the stat about how many times we lose when Gundogan starts if it all turns out to be irrelevant? You don't have to keep going on about why you hate him you know and peddling useless stats for your narrative.

Why? Barry was fuckin class
He was don’t disagree at all but he’s not the flashy player that comes to mind first . Way better than gundogun and we’d have got to the CL semis last year at least if he had played. A lot more determined, energetic and brave compared to gundogun

If Barry were here instead of Gundogan you'd be writing the exact same posts about Gundogan but with Barry's name instead.

15 defeats you say?

9 PL + 1 FAC + 1 CL + 1 LC = 12 defeats.

So how the fuck did Gundogan start 13 of 15 defeats?

The problem as I see it is we were known as this fast, in your face team who harried the opposition as soon as they had possession and usually forced them into a mistake where we get the ball back. Press, press, press is what Peps teams are built on but it’s an impossible task when you have both Gundo and Rodri in the middle, two fairly slow CB’s a LB position without pace and if Mahrez is on the pitch then one less forward willing to do the dirty work.
It basically leaves us with only 5 players to put the graft in which results in them being too tired to do the things they excel at.
The team is too ponderous, or at least was last season.
If we don’t inject some pace and power in the team we will have a similar season to the last one.
Gundo isn’t our only problem but he’s certainly part of it.

There are quite a few players who slow the game down.

For example, Sterling slows the game down when he plays on the left because he’s constantly slowing down to a stop and cutting back onto his right foot.

That’s not right. Sterling is pacy, cutting to his right is a change of direction not pace. The only other player who slows the game down for city unnecessarily other than gundogun is mahrez

Both Sterling and Mahrez slow us down.

Sterling definitely doesn’t just change direction by using his right. He cuts back onto his right and just passes backwards far too much on the left wing.

Can we all agree then that the issues are much more than whether Gundogan plays or not?

Not saying things would be different if he played but it's definitely not down to one player
With Garcia out and Mendy out once Cancelo is fit, people need a scapegoat.

World cup winner and Pep favorite but sh1t lol
