FogBlueInSanFran replied to one of my posts, in essence it revolved around whether Trump was an aberration or the inevitable consequence of a broken political and economic system, it's fair to say we disagreed and I was going to reply but decided against it.

And the reason is simple.

Even though you and I share quite a bit of common, I believe there's still something to be said for backing off and letting folk sort their own shit out. Regardless of how powerful the USA is and how what happens there reverberates around the world, and regardless of the global reach of the neoliberals, this is their show, this is their history, this is just another step towards a more perfect union, or not.

I've been to the USA more times than I can remember, the first time was way back when Jimmy Carter was President. I've vacationed there many times and worked for years for an American company based in Philadelphia, I was back and forth all the time, I love that city and its people. But much as I love the place and much as I keep a close eye on what goes on, I'm not American and that matters. I don't wake up every morning and go to work with my fellow Americans, I don't have my finger on the pulse, don't know the zeitgeist, my opinions are completely detached, there's nothing visceral about them, fond of the country as I am, there's not gut to what I feel, in the end it's not my country, I've no dog in the race.

And that matters.

When something is not right and a person is in real pain, the pain becomes everything, it needs to be dealt with, we all know this.

That is also true of a people.

You and I suspect that Biden may not be up to much, but he does hold out the prospect of alleviating the pain of Trump for the American people, that matters, regardless of what comes next, that really matters.

And the people best placed to say so are Americans themselves, not just because they're the only ones with a vote, but because this is their moment in history, their moment to choose, their destiny, their country, it's not ours. There comes a point that no matter how smart you and I might think we are, and no matter how far the USA is from....

It's the American people who'll decide whether it....

The long and the short of it is, who’s names will appear on the ballot paper.
They’re your choices.
Us on this side of the Atlantic saying one is as bad as the other (which I don’t go along with. One most definitely is a ****), is neither here nor there.

SB has set up a new thread for the election. The system being broke is a different matter.

This is about the lead up, the rallies, public opinion - yes, but it ultimately comes down to what are the realistic choices for the American electorate.

I understand that entirely. I do.

If there were no threads on American politics where British people can eulogise over a flawed system/ party or politician, I wouldn't offer anything... But that's not the case and this thread/ these threads exist.

If the Americans wants to preach love for their system and candidates on a UK site, we have the right of our opinion of what we see, positive and negative or they can do one.

Otherwise do away with these threads.

I find the British electoral system as baffling. I don’t like FIrst past the post.
We always end up with a coalition government now, but I find the multi seated constituencies with PR far more democratic, in my view.
 
Will go back and catch this thread up but can anyone tell me what channels I can catch up on the US election news?
Have limited tv channels (free view) but have Netflix/prime...

Fox News and NBC have live news feeds on you tube for it.

If have the mobdro app you'll be able to access all American news networks for their perspectives on it.

I think Idaho is probably the reddest State in the Country, having said that Boise and the surrounding area is becoming the new 'place to be' from all around the Country. The whole State has less than 2 million people and I can see things changing in the future with a more concentrated urban area
 
The result might not be known for days or weeks after Nov. 3, what with cyber attacks, postal ballots, arguments over "vote fixing", and Trump's desperate desire to hold on to power. It could end up for the courts to decide. This will be the V.A.R. for American democracy.

With its small population it would only take an additional 200,000 Dem voters to flip it, so if people are moving there I suppose it wouldn’t be impossible in the future.
 
The Senate is actually far more relevant than the Presidential yawn. That is hanging on a knife-edge (almost certain to be 51/49 or 50/50) with 6 toss-up races, variety of rules around ballot-counting, possibility of two run-off races in GA in January (thus delaying the outcome), and the likelihood of multiple legal challenges. And the outcome really matters
