Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

No it's the way I phrased it, she wants them controlled, either banned entirely or very strictly monitored.

Thats not even a hard left position for the States, which really says something about the depth of the problem. Same with abortion. Mainstream average Americans on balance heavily favor right to choose and bans/far stricter regulations on the sale of firearms.

Well isn't that basically americas political problem in a nutshell? About 20% of Americans identify as republicans and yet they are the dominant party despite a new republican president not winning the popular vote in nearly 40 years.

They are the ruling minority who openly brag about using illegal disenfranchisement, voter suppression and gerrymandering as ways to compete against the majority.

Yes, but I'd say the Republicans allowing Trump to take over the party and leverage the most extreme and least educated segment of the base tells you a lot about how their core message is eroding -- fiscal discipline, strong foreign policy, lower regulations, lower taxes, conservative social principles. That last one is a real bugbear for the party. Hell, this year the Republicans just Xeroxed their platform from 2016 -- literally. They're out of ideas, so a populist has infected and co-opted the entire party. But they aren't "dominant" -- it's a cult of personality that is currently "dominating" but if all goes well that's going to get repudiated in spades in a month (albeit with plenty of potential monkey wrenches to dodge). If the House, Senate and Presidency are blue the red side of America needs a pretty long think at how to regain the national stage.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will stream Among Us tonight beginning at 9 pm ET

I find this absolutely fascinating. She will be joining the gaming streaming platform and playing Among Us later tonight. No doubt she will be joined by many young liberal Americans, but I feel that the platform and using this as a way of connecting is incredible. I would be interested to see if she's actually any good at gaming or not haha!

She and other politician should fuck off and let folk game in peace.

Its an escape for many, not an opportunity to canvas for a vote.

What next? Trump entering a Madden competition, Boris on FIFA?

The thought of Trump rage quitting a game of Madden fills me with absolute glee. Obviously AOC see's herself as down with the kids. But I am very interested to see if this will work. Will all those youngsters that don't see any point in voting think "She's a streamer and a gamer. She must be cool". Probably. Definitely more in common with her than the ramblings of some old billionaire.

More likely to rage-quit a game of Pong -- he and his tiny paddle.

She's not the only one in congress who's a gamer...

Catch up on it.

Starts about 15 mins in with her setting up before gaming later.

Not resting on their laurels, those that have helped secure Biden the presidency in some instances remind him that he shouln't now ignore them and the voices within rhe democrats that want change for the better.

Also such a shame she considered not running because she was tired of having to battle vitriol and opposition inside her own party

It's precisely why I believe very little will change for the better in the bigger picture for the US. Democratic party is toxic as all hell - it really is two sides of the same coin with the Repubs

AOC et al should blaze a trail with a progressive party instead of lending credibility to Democrats. No true change will happen until this binary party BS is killed once & for all

I completely disagree.

You seem to desire a very progressive social-democracy or maybe even socialist US government - this isn't going to happen within the next few decades - rural America is entirely against this - and rural Americans hold roughly 1/2 the national vote.

Whereas, under Biden, massive change will occur - decision making based on science and expert consensus will once again prevail - as opposed to anti-science/whatever Trump believes governance.

On the world stage, the US will once again engage as a force for Democracy - renewing our friendships with traditional allies.

With respect to policing - the prospect for major reform now exists under Biden. Police are far too aggressive in their interactions - especially with minorities and for sure with African-Americans. The over-aggressive posture adopted by police far too often leads to bad outcomes - officers draw their guns and shoot - when less aggressive actions would have sufficed.

Finally, the caustic us-versus-them mentality advanced at every turn by Trump - will be replaced by leadership wishing not to spark confrontation where possible.

Quite. Biden will know which areas he make a significant impact in, and AOC will be supportive of any action, also knowing that Rome wasn't built in a day.

All splitting off would do is to carve away Democrat votes and elect whoever the Republicans put up, and also likely put the split party out of office. That's clearly the worst possible scenario for Democrats.

This may be true to some extent, but I think the "big change" only comes after changes to the electoral systems.

Plurality voting or FPTP systems heavily favour a two-party system. It's hard to make the case that a new progressives party would be able to split from the democrats and then survive over the long-run or take their place as a challenger to Republicans. The rump of the democrats would have to consistently take their eye off the ball for that to be realistically possible.

Biden's job IMO, is to prepare the Democratic party and the country for a shift to the left.

That's going to start with things like legalising weed, decreasing the prison population, keeping or expanding medicare 4 all etc but the big one is pushing through a new voters rights act that stops voter suppression in states like Florida, Texas, South Carolina.

Trump was right when he said this last year about the voters rights bill - "They had things, levels of voting that if you’d ever agreed to it, you’d never have a Republican elected in this country again.”

That's how Biden can shift the whole country, not just the Democrats left.

The republican party only wins in a country where the vote is suppressed and where gerrymandering is rampant. If Biden and a Democratic congress can bring US elections into the 20th century, the Republicans will have no choice but to move back to the centre.

That's mostly along the lines I was thinking, but in a lot more detail and with more thought!
