Where are people *actually* catching it? Is there any detailed data around that? I read that only 5% of cases were in ‘hospitality’ but not a lot else

Regional data for Covid patients yesterday to today in England hospitals:

London patients up 272 to 312 (was 257 a wk ago) ventilators up 50 to 56 (was 48 a wk ago)

Midlands patients up 389 - 449 (was 360 a wk ago) ventilators up 62 to 70 (was 53 a wk ago)

Yorks/NE patients up 572 - 656 (was 441 a wk ago) ventilators down 78 to 76 (was 55 a wk ago)

And North West:

patients up 816 to 889 (was 604 a wk ago) ventilators up 95 to 104 (was 74 a wk ago). Relatively big rise here today.

The last time there were 889 patients in NW was 10 June and the last time 104 on ventilators was 26 May.

Mainly where people live, when meeting in places without ventilation. If everyone who met indoors, sat 6 feet apart and had 2 windows open, they wouldn’t pass it on. The 5% in hospitality has been revised down to 3% and includes pubs, cafes, bars and restaurants. Would increase in any place hugely if any singing is involved, one of the reasons places of worship were involved early on.

You’d expect the PM and his ministers to understand the rules to be fair and if they don’t, what price the rest of us?

whats important is you understand the rules where you live, not Boris Johnson. He did a circuit of regional interviews last week and was coming unstuck, but I couldn’t care less.

I was banging the drum on this one as soon as they started to bring in different rules for different areas; government should have developed a post code checker where you put in your postcode and it told you want the current rules were where you lived.

Anyway, the BBC have now done this and the link for it is here https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-54373904

But it’s not usual now is it, there’s more suicides due to depression because of Covid lockdown and that’s just one example.
Wait until the cancer, cardiac and stroke deaths are eventually known, they’ll be off the scale. Same will be true for the mental health numbers when many people realise their jobs are never coming back, their houses are being repossessed and their life has turned to total shit...

Quite right but why’s it the BBC doing it?
Not only that, I’d love to see the science behind some of these arbitrary measures brought in with 6 hours notice and huge penalties for doing something at 0001 tomorrow that I could be doing legally now, with no scrutiny whatsoever.

I honestly don’t know mate. It’s a simple thing to develop and (should) clear up any confusion.

I love the fact you could be fined £10k for breaking rules, what if you’ve just lost your job or even worse your home, Joe they expected to pay that!!

The GM scoreboard today totals: 1371. That is from the NW total of 3166 - 43% and a little down on yesterday but higher than it was last week when it was falling as many of the unreported cases were from the NW.

So in truth the % of cases in GM has remained pretty consistent even though it has been under restrictions for some time now. No real sign that it is making more than a small difference one way or the other tbh.

Though that one way is downward.

1371 is down from 3019 yesterday - so a huge fall in every borough's numbers obviously.

And there have actually been two other numbers higher than it in the past two weeks not apparemtly connected to the problems with the data.

So all in all GM has come through this better than it might.

I keep asking the same question, where are the infections? Schools, pubs, shops?? I did read the other week that 44% of outbreaks were in care homes but that was before the university outbreaks.

Bollox this is a PHE problem.
PHE is largely gone now Blue Anorak and Dido Harding is in charge of most of its former functions

Whoever is responsible for this shambles, it is not just a data management issue. Somebody in a senior position should have been close enough to the info / trends and used their brain to establish that something had gone badly wrong. They can’t just hide behind saying the problem wouldn’t have happened if the data was recorded on a suitable database. The spike in cases from the student Halls or Residence was all over the local and national news. In addition, I posted a week ago that testing in Newcastle was finding 1 in 10 people had the virus and this wasn’t reflected in the case numbers.

Thanks, Oh i see, I assume Excel doesnt tell you this then while you are inputting the data??

I suspect it was an automated copying thing from multiple sources into one which got 'full'.

Limits are (I think) 16000 columns but 1 million rows. So if the numbers went above 16000, it just was lost.

There wouldn't be an error message unless it was set up - such as if no-one expected 16000+.
