I think this could have gone a lot better without this government and I think the civil service from a distance seems pretty poor as well. I don't expect lessons will be learnt.

I make you right but I doubt the opposition would have been any less hopeless. There are no large countries governments done too well though few as bad as us i will give you.

Germany, China, South Korea and Japan are all pretty big countries who appear to have controlled the outbreak reasonably well.

Yes they have but they are going to cop for the fallout of it just as much as everyone else, and I have to suggest a question mark should have followed China as we really cannot be certain about them. Maybe infact they have found and rolled out a vaccine as it seems very strange to me they are not seemingly experiencing any great issues currently.....not sure I am having that unless they have indeed done something we dont know about.

The Chinese have a massive diaspora not all of whom are keen on the government, if there had been mass vaccination within China secrecy would be impossible.

London is over it largely it would seem? Why can’t they open back up?
I think that’s a bit of a leap to say that London is “over it largely”. Their figures currently aren’t as bad as ours in the north west, but that could presumably change quite quickly.

maybe but it is fairing much better than up here and I can only guess that is because more had it in March? What else could be the reason? Very densely populated down there?

Again I would think you are right but something doesnt add up.
I must admit with the sheer extent of covid throughout the world I do agree that unless their quarantining is world class it doesn't completely add up. Having said that a lot of East Asian countries do seem to be doing well.

Yeah, it does seem an anomaly although I’m sure someone brighter than me can explain it. That said it’s hard to trust the figures we are being given anyway.

what’s your plan.

nobody is suggesting you let it rip. You focus your protections on those at risk . Have a look at my post.

lets assume we ain’t getting a vaccine for a while , what’s your strategy ?

I would not even know where to start with a strategy should that be the case.

Plenty have suggested let it rip. You cannot however expect those at risk to life in some sort of seperate bubble for anymore than they did during lockdown proper. You may as well just euthanase the lot of us.

This , immunity is not proved and wont be for a while yet , until your dr can look you in the eye and say you have had it a and will never get it again then it is not proven

A vaccine will never be ready to roll out before end of the year , people mistook the scientists saying we will know it is safe and works by the end of the year , there are 70 m people to vaccinate , by dec , really ?

As for sweden , you cannot compare and not reading links you use to back your corner is annoying

As you were

In fairness Kaz I think there have been some noises about having made a start on the most vulnerable by the end of the year I doubt even the only slightly thick would think we could jab the population by end of December. How realistic that is remains to be seen of course.

we don’t need to vaccinate 70m and never will. Think I read the very maximum needed would be 50 percent. Vulnerable first. No need to vaccinate kids.

Just as an FYI as I can’t explain it but it’s not that much more densely populated than Manchester.

Manchester 4716 per square Km
London 5701 per square Km.

On a work day with commuters tho? That’s probably a massive difference.

If it proves effective in order to make it pretty safe you would probably get away with over 60s plus those who are recommended the flu jab. That would likely reduce covid to a minor threat by and large.

I will caution against ruling out vaccinating younger including kids given the frequency of Long Covid. I can assure you I wish they had a vaccine against glandular fever when I was 14....

I think it's pretty simple.

The Swedes follow the voluntary rules better than we follow the compulsory ones.

It's much easier because:
- social security is more generous of you're affected
- far less overcrowded housing
- much more dispersed population.

You can't translate Göteborg to Mänchester!

And like I said above, except for the UK they've killed more people than anyone in Europe, and still crashed their economy. So it's not all ginger peachy.

[Edit. Re. Masks, they're pretty marginal AFAIK. Every little helps, but not a game changer]
Why do you keep saying "they have killed people"? No one has actually killed anyone but many people have sadly died.

I think having witnessed first hand the current lifestyle in Sweden and seeing the hugely significant lower new infection rates and compared to the UK, I know where I would prefer to be right now. :)

Presumably it’d be similar to the existing flu jab in terms of who was given it.

I was shocked the other day when I read how men people have the flu jab each year - I might be wrong but 15 million maybe!

I have only had flu once a few years back and ended up in hospital and on oxygen. As an asmathic it was horrendous, felt like I was drowning. Took me a good two months to build my strength back up.

and you have to remember two of the busiest airports in the world. It clearly reached and spread there first and far quicker than up here in March. Must be approaching 20 percent have had it down there now???

More likely they are just not telling the truth. The state controls everything.
