It's not a lockdown is it? If you live in a tier 2 area you can travel to a non tier 2 area and visit them in their house, what's practical about that?

Scientists completely disagree about everything, a lockdown should be just that, a lockdown surely?

They've even extended the visits in care homes and allowed people to touch their relatives while they visit, what can possibly go wrong there?
If you live in a ‘high’ area (or tier 2) you can’t have anyone in your home or go in theirs no matter what area they are in. That’s been the same for Greater Manchester since local restrictions were brought in.

This isn't really true. Of course, with a new virus, the scientific community is learning, and science is inherently driven by people testing new and sometimes controversial ideas.

But. On the main points, there is very strong scientific agreement. What disagreement there is has been deliberately inflated by right wing media and pressure groups (see Great Barrington declaration above).

Indeed, what's remarkable for covid is how little the scientific advice has changed from day 1.

And there we go. Right wing, left wing or middle they are still more qualified than you or I, but you dismiss them due to your own beliefs on it and refuse to consider anything else. There are lots of scientists sat on either side of the fence and the ones that are against lockdowns are not all right wing and those that are pro-lockdown are not all left wing. Maybe they believe their scientific views and don't base this on their political leaning?

2.6 Can I stay overnight in someone else’s home?

Yes, you can stay overnight in someone else’s home, but only if you do not form a gathering of more than 6 people.

The local landlords in the town where I live organised a protest march this morning against the measures imposed on pubs. I had a look down as fancied a laugh. About 30 showed up (5 people for every pub) & about 40 police were in attendance. Now, the lad who organised the whole thing is gay & was on facebook saying another group from outside the area were going to join in until he found out that this group are basically homophobic.

Couldnt make it up

that link applies for general rule of 6 until the end of today. the patchwork of local restrictions, that ends today, overrides it

Thats national guidance from September. Weve been in local restrictions since beginning of August.
This is current from yesterday

Social contact restrictions

If you live in one of the affected areas, in order to help prevent the spread of coronavirus you must not:

  • host people you do not live with in your home or garden, unless they’re in your support or childcare bubble
  • meet people you do not live with in their home or garden, whether inside or outside the affected local areas, unless they’re in your support or childcare bubble

I haven’t seen people comparing England with New Zealand. Some people, including myself, have said New Zealand have done an excellent job with fantastic leadership. That’s a fact.

New Zealand has a fairly similar population density to Sweden btw. It’s very difficult to compare any 2 Countries for Covid response but some have clearly done better than others Demographics can help of course.
New Zealand have only done a great job until a vaccine can be proved to work, and can eliminate the virus. Until then, all they are doing is being good at keeping it out, and fair play for that, but they are in a far better position than we are/were.

If they want to ever return to normality, and start visiting the rest of the world, and have the rest of the world visit them, they will have to reopen, and unless the virus has been eradicated it will inevitably get back in. It's summer there now (or soon) so that helps, but after every summer, winter follows, so lets see where they are in 6 months time.

So I have just read that Manchester Is already under review as cases rising .
must be falling everywhere else eh?
Looking at the reporting on the MEN website, Manchester won a victory in name only. They now have to try and get numbers down with little support, whilst Liverpool will be praised for taking the sensible route.

Just a random thought but wouldn’t we be better off spending some of this cash being thrown around on just making sure people self isolate as it seems that it’s only about 20% doing it? Locking down the infected, instead of going for blanket bans, mass unemployment, mass bankruptcies etc sounds much more likely to succeed. You’d keep workplaces open, pay the infected to stay at home and hopefully strike a balance between the two extreme position.
I know you need a fully functioning testing regime but here’s hoping....
Not only that but Sweden have gone to 7 days (from symptoms or +ve test, whichever is later) which seems eminently more doable than 2 weeks and are much more compliant.

So a threesome is ok but a gangbang will have to be put off for a while?

Genuinely wrecks my head reading this thread and watching the news (not very often, mind, it's fucking depressing!) and seeing how up the wall it all is in the UK. I really feel for you all because quite honestly life is pretty much back to normal in the Valencia region of Spain.
Masks are mandatory which is abided to by all, social distancing in place which again is being adhered to and everywhere you go there are dispensers for cleaning hands.
The vast majority of businesses are open and apart from bars having to close at 1am you'd think life was fairly back on track.
Obviously not all of Spain is in the same boat, some parts such as Madrid will have a different tale to tell, but as it stands l think we've probably got it as good as anywhere right now.
Obviously things can change in an instant but for now I can't grumble.

I thought that when Northern cities were being offered money to go into Very High/Tier 3 category. Why not spend the money ensuring the current restrictions are being observed and followed, before assuming theyre not working. A couple I know came back from Spain on Friday. They were on the allotment next to mine on Sunday!

My son lives in Madrid with his Spanish wife and theyve had a terrible time of it. Hes now closed his restaurant for good. However he doesn't seem as downbeat and gloomy as we all are! Maybe its the sun.

If you believed Sky News you would be under a blanket in your bathtub.

my slight worry is that even in France, Spain and Germany (some local areas excepted) they havent gone so hard on people meeting up in small groups. It feels in the UK we're being quite heavily targeted at a personal level

Maybe in Spain they all just enjoy the time and relax whereas here we have to batter each other over Brexit, the news or whose at fault for the virus... Because what else is there to do?

I genuinely think most of the rubbish and problems we create for ourselves here are purely down to boredom. In other countries they probably wouldn't mind sitting outside and doing nothing alone whereas here it's apparently a death sentence.

It's why you get lunatics queuing up at the Trafford Centre or Ikea for one last hurrah in the midst of a second wave when really they could just sit at home and take the time to relax.

Mandatory masks, social distancing, street dispensers sounds very familiar.
