Heard yesterday on radio 2 that taxis were taking people from Bolton to Wigan to go on the piss and Wigan taxi drivers were kicking off about fares.Ref the question about Wigan's rise which I cannot find again to quote (sorry) it was the lowest in GM throughout the pandemic up to August. When it was left out of the GM lockdown because of its tiny numbers. Then Bolton went gaga. And I suspect half of Bolton went boozing in Wigan as it was near enough and unrestricted.
Does not explain why it has stayed up there and is doing worse than Bolton now. But it has a lot of infected areas ringing it and like Rossendale (enclircled by out of control towns and for a tiny borpugh tipped off a cliff suddenly) I think Wigan was partly a victim of geography.
As are we all really in a pandemic.
Not surprised, I really regret going there 4-5 weeks ago, just before the kids went back to schoo. It was sunny, packed & fun, but I was 1 in 100 (and that’s being generous) who actually had a mask on. I was getting stared at like I was an idiot. The pier & front was jammed.Blackpool Victoria IC now full
Possibly at the request of the Mayor ?Government to have a gold meeting ? tomorrow to discuss GM going to tier 3
Could be, I’ll put the news on laterPossibly at the request of the Mayor ?
This is part of the problem isn't it - yesterday it wasn't a problem and now it is. Within 3 days we'll have created a tier system, put GM in as tier 2 then within less than 48 hours it could be tier 3.Government to have a gold meeting ? tomorrow to discuss GM going to tier 3
Will they deliver my naked wine order ?
It’s an odd one. Positive tests in Manchester, Salford, Trafford already decreasing. Rate of increase in Lancashire coming down steadily.Government to have a gold meeting ? tomorrow to discuss GM going to tier 3
Just what I have been thinking. Totally out of their depth. Remind me of Ole... Problem is what's the alternative. Not Starmer imo. If I were the Tory grandees I'd be asking Ian Duncan Smith and Jeremy Hunt to step in then form a coalition of the best(I use that term loosely). We're really in a real mess with this now aren't we?
Think back over the last year - Johnson shaking hands with Covid patients, going late into the lockdown, saying they put a shield around care homes when in fact they sent infected people back, the PPE scandal, ordering the wrong PPE, not bothering to test early on, the top team getting covid, the Cummings affair, having a national lockdown whilst people strolled through our airports, the GCSE cock up and u turn, putting their mate Harding in charge of testing which she is plainly not capable of doing, the A level cock up and u turn, setting up 'eat out to help out' then within weeks looking at shutting down bars and restaurants, the mixed-up-muddled up messaging, sending freshers to university and get infected and spread the infection around towns and cities, the mobile app cock ups, the testing cock ups and disasters, traffic lights to tiers. Everything they've touched has been utterly shambolic, lethal and pretty much wrong. It's hard to imagine how any lay person could do such a bad job.
Genuinely, I had some sympathy for Johnson and Hancock at the start of the pandemic. However, they are an absolute disgrace and have shown themselves to be so far out of their depth it's a national disgrace and embarrassment. And I've not mentioned Brexit.
They've had MONTHS to sort out track and trace and it's still not functioning correctly. Even if Hancock told me it was sorted, I'd have absolutely no confidence he was telling the truth. He doesn't know what it looks like and neither do his sidekicks Johnson and Harding. It's a disgrace.
Unless we get the health emergency under some kind of control, the economy is not going to recover. It's absolutely that simple. It's a crisis of confidence now.
If we have a 'national lockdown' then it absolutely has to be used around half term and it absolutely has to be used to get track and trace fixed. Without it, there's no chance of any semblance of normality or economic recovery. We're just going to head into Christmas then next year with the same problem. There seems to be no end in sight and we cannot hope and pray that a vaccine just pops up. We have to get testing, tracing, isolating working NOW.
We have an emergency in the coming weeks and the government have lost the spirit of the people. If we don't get a grip on testing we'll end up with the same problem again at Christmas.
Just a guess tbf. It might have something to do with being privvy to the SAGE analysis, from September.Could be, I’ll put the news on later
I had dealings with Eyebrows Burnham when he was Health Secretary. A career politician with little sense whose main achievement has purely been his own advancement. It’s an odd one. Positive tests in Manchester, Salford, Trafford already decreasing. Rate of increase in Lancashire coming down steadily.
I can only think it’s at Burnham‘s request as I think the council get twice as much per head whilst they’re in tier 3?
They'll be adding a tier 4 next week....This is part of the problem isn't it - yesterday it wasn't a problem and now it is. Within 3 days we'll have created a tier system, put GM in as tier 2 then within less than 48 hours it could be tier 3.
The messaging has been an absolute mess and there will be plenty of pubs, restaurants, their staff, suppliers, supplier staff and other related services who can barely plan from one day to the other.
That description fits the entire Cabinet and Shadow Cabinet.A career politician with little sense whose main achievement has purely been his own advancement.
They'll be adding a tier 4 next week....
