Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Thread

Even though Sheikh Mansour has the money to expand the North stand, and he could do that himself under FFP rules, it doesn’t make financial since if we can’t fill the expanded stand *and the rest of the stadium*. Being honest and using common sense.

Even if Messi did signed next year, it would take a couple years to get the expanded North stand through planning and built.

And there’s little or no chance of crowds getting back to normal for the next season or two.

Saying that, if the club are still thinking of expanding the NS, which I doubt, going of what Khaldoon recently said, now is the perfect time to do the expansion. The club could close the NS of, start construction, and still accommodate fans who want to go to matches over the coming months and into next season.

The NS expansion aside. I’d like to see other parts of the Etihad Campus developed, now the arena is under construction. The nearby Collar Site would be a good starting point. It’s been like that ever since Sheikh Mansour bought the club. A wasted opportunity in my opinion. And an opportunity that could have bought more revenue into the club.

It seems the majority of blues are not bothered about increasing the capacity. If the owners of the clubs cannot justify that expansion, I'm sure they must be looking what they can do to improve the look and feel of the stadium with a more conservative increase in the number of seats at tram end of the stadium. A single tier to create a blue wall would be a good idea with ticket prices to get people back into the stadium. More important will be the outside of the stadium with particular attention on increasing the size and quality of the roof both inside and outside. Along with other things this could improve the match experience, by putting things under one roof. The owners must have adapted there previous plans to reflect numerous factors that have changed over the past couple of season. What plans have been shared and provisionally with the council @jrb ?
I personally think the stadium looks pretty good right now. It's certainly not in urgent need of modernisation.

In a perfect world, I'd love to have a huge, 1 tiered end behind the north stand. But it doesn't make any financial sense. The club was talking about it as an option pre-lockdown, but remember, COVID will have hit our finances and we don't know what demand will be like moving forward. Also, we might not fill every game at the minute, but as the population within manchester is set to grow over the next decade, I doubt the club will want to edit the stadium in a way that makes future expansions more difficult.

The most sensible option the club can take now is to wait and see what happens with ticket sales next season.

City have a fan base in Manchester alone to sustain large crowds but the club have concentrated on profits, corporates and worldwide reach, and have missed out on getting a grip of our local fans.

Also, City have lost long standing match going fans. I know bloody loads who’ve stopped going. Lads who felt their tickets got too expensive; the way the club concentrated on a kids’ theme park matchday experience left a few lads feeling disconnected and not part-of-it anymore; lads who had to move from parts of the stadium to make way for new areas like the Family Stand or corporates (one lad sat on Level 2 and had to make way for corporate areas and was told he couldn’t sit next to his mate as they could find two seats together so he stopped going full stop).

I think City have [wrongly] tried to become a worldwide supported club and they’ve not done things well with people who were already City fans or already matchgoing fans.
Word for word bang on the money absolutely all the above.

We're officially up and running.

When piling rigs are onsite, that pretty much means construction has (officially) started.

Does this have anything to do with the club?

I would agree that now is probably not the time to think about North Stand expansion. The lockdown will certainly have some impacts on attendances once things open up again. Some of the regular support will have got out of the habit of attending regularly. City's support appear to be above the average age of that of many other clubs, so it will probably hit us harder than others.

I suspect that once things reopen, the club will take some time to assess when the North Stand extension will happen. It will depend on how quickly the crowds come back and what the take up is from the next generation.

for me safe standing will be the next improvement before any expansion to the north stand
also it will be used in the game to get fans back into football with cheaper tickets

I say get the North Stand extension built, its a good time, yes fans may drop away when we get back to normal, but that means we can have a reduced capacity while it is built, it will take two years, and they don't need to rush, finish it correctly. In time fans will come back, over my many years of supporting City, I have seen our attendances change, they always will, all clubs will have similar issues, but when everything recovers, fans will return.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

City should have left the SS as it was.

Left the away fans where they were.

And instead expanded the NS, building a large single or double tiered stand.

But, additional corporate facilities in SSL2, the NS family stand, and reducing the away end/following in SS L1 and L2, put paid to any NS expansion.

According to the FT the Hackers only have 5000+ season ticket holders with a Liverpool postcode.

It just goes to show how much out of town support the Hackers (and the Rags) get every home game, which we know. City are nowhere near that yet. A won't be unless we keep on winning trophies on a regular basis in the future. City are still a predominantly Manchester supported club.

Just seen a video on Instagram of Stockport County tarting up Edgeley Park . Just wondering if City are doing anything like this. Surely with this shut down, it's a great time to do things ?

Totally agree with your sentiments, but I don’t believe there were many alternatives after the birth of FFP, which essentially forces clubs to maximise profits.

If we hadn’t gone down the corporate/worldwide road, where extra profit can be generated, would we have faired even worse with FFP than we already have? I’d guess so.

I’d suggest that UEFAs ridiculous FFP laws have hurt the average fan with prices, which is something I feel has been overlooked.

Would we have gone down the corporate/worldwide road without FFP? Possibly, but I feel FFP forced our hand.

I suppose one alternative would be player sales, thus weakening the team, which I don’t think any of us want

As funny as it was, it’s not true. It was just an Everton Twitter wind up.
