A suggestion not to assume the "new mutation" piece is of particular significance. As others have pointed out, many mutations of the virus are already out there. I'll be awaiting some more meaningful info.

Someone upthread asked if the different vaccines might respond differently?

My understanding: All three have the same fundamental mode of action - they take the piece if generic material (RNA) which codes for the virus spike protein and release it inside our cells, which then make the protein, triggering an immune response. They differ by the means of transporting the RNA into the cells. The sequence coding for the spike protein could be taken from any mutation of the virus, but all were developed early in the pandemic; I would guess (but don't know) they all have identical sequences so are all equally (un)likely to be affected by mutations.

I think it's also right to say that mutations to date have no or minimal effect on spike protein.
Oxford vaccine uses a Adenovirus which is a DNA virus engineered to carry a gene for the spike protein - that's different to the mRNA vaccines.

Sorry, yes, the point I was trying to make was that the sequence of the spike protein generating immunity is likely the same for both, so you would expect both to be affected by a new mutation?

Prof Whitty

Last few days rates of increasing fast , doubling every seven days in new tier three areas

Covid patients in hosps are rising in london and the south areas going into 3

Oddly they are not quoting todays data which is delayed again without explanation. Usually they delay it so it can be announced at a press conference but that hospital patient number Hancock gave is from 10 December. Not today.

Is there a chance Manchester and Lancashire be dropped to tier 2 in your opinion ?

Like Germany who currently allow 2 households to meet expanded from 24th to 26th December.

this isn’t going away. To restrict family contact for all this time is ludicrous. Families can make their own decisions whether to meet.

Yes, but we should say no. In my opinion. Several GM boroughs agree with me and have said as much today.

Tier 3 is why GM is way down on where it was and we might have a less fatal Christmas than tier 2 areas which are clearly not good at bringing numbers down and just attract infected people from nearby tier 3 areas to party and spread their virus.

I don't expect this will happen and I live in an area that in no way by the numbers should be in tier 3. But I think it has helped a lot to face the next two or three months until the vaccines start to help which if you start high and go higher will be horrendous. Starting low going into the Christmas truce is a good thing.

@Healdplace

Quick question

I don't have the time to trawl and manipulate data to get the answers for my area. What's the best place for up to date cases, hospital cases etc for a specific area, say by council region? Or is it a case of viewing the generic stuff that's a week behind?

Thanks

If tier 3 is our saving grace, how come Liverpool havent seen a massive rise since being in tier 2?

Can’t wait to be put into tier 2 this week, need to be quick and get restaurants booked for around Xmas and NYE and it’s been difficult to get any good ones during this most recent tiered period. A bit of freedom is well overdue.

The difference between 2 and 3 is only restaurants can serve food and can mix in gardens as well as parks.

considering restaurants have been proven not to be the spreader of the disease the increase in London is not down to being in tier 2 over 3.

any increase in NW would not be down to being in tier 2.

it’s just the natural flow and fluctuation of the virus.

the doctors and scientists really haven’t been grown up about this whole thing and are arguably getting worse. They are desperate to stop people seeing family at Christmas. It will make their soulless selves happy
