Coronavirus (2021) thread

I’ve got some right rum mates but thankfully out of all of them I only know three who have flaunted rules and been a bit cunty (and come out with some social media conspiracy shite).

We’ve got other mates, one with one lung and one who’s had a kidney transplant in the last couple of years, and parents who’re vulnerable, so most of us have been sensible throughout.

I’ve not seen any of them since February last year.

Although my Father was telling me that his next door neighbours were quoting David Icke to him before Christmas... they’ve always seemed such normal people n’all!
I know some conspiracy types.

Even my next door neighbour, who’s 80+, her daughter who must be 50’s, has been very careful with her mum throughout and has obeyed the rules, she said to me the other week when I was getting in my car that she’s not decided if she’ll get the vaccine as it’s all rushed and “dodgy”.

I couldn’t believe it as she seems so sensible.

I can still work from home and mix home schooling our 10 year old. However throw our 3 year old into the mix and makes working from home almost unworkable.
Exactly. Asking people to work from home and shutting nurseries and infant schools is a non starter. I’ve worked with under 5s all the way through and the risk is tiny,

I didn’t call her a bitch to be fair but she’s politicised the whole coronavirus situation to separate Scotland from England since day one

As England had the very worst wave one in the entire world, separating Scotland from it seems very sensible.

And as the only way you can do that is with policy, then surely that means politicising it was inevitable.

I've not seen her crowing about how much better Scotland is re Covid, she seems just to have got on with it.

But I've not really paid her much attention other than via Jane Godley!

im all for one last lockdown. But i fall into the category of 3 million who dont receive a penny in assistance if im stopped working (in peoples houses) . Im sat here torn between knowing its needed and worrying sick about how im going to put food on the table. Its a horrible.
It’s a proper shit situation, I feel for you. I have a few mates and Father in the same boat.

However there are ways to food shop cheaply, and it’s better to struggle now than have a family without you by the off chance you ended up dying from it.

I know that’s a bit blunt but it’s the way me and my mates have been talking about it.

Yeah, reduced by maybe 0.1 for every vaccination of the highly vulnerable (mortality is as high as 10% for over 80s).

And that was unmitigated (no restrictions) (slower transmission results in less overall deaths), I think the mitigated scenario was 250,000?

But of course if hospitals are truly overwhelmed that could be worse.

Incidentally it's the IFR ( infection fatality ratio) estimated at 1%. That's deaths per actual infection.

The case fatality rate, CFR, is deaths per positive test. The CFR will be higher than the IFR because we don't find all infections. So far, the CFR is roughly 0.3% (2.7 million positives, 75000 deaths).

But into 6 figures more dead by end March without action, almost certainly.
Think you mean CFR is 3% not 0.3%

The two geordie players are having a hard time getting back , i hope all of the players who get it have their hearts tested as a matter of course

Yeah, I can't help feeling that in years to come there will be major health issues traced back to this virus.

If there is any truth to these stories regarding exercise then it opens a whole new can of worms.

Another one who is blinkered by poor science. There are not 710k killed by flu each year. The official stats show on average 11k die from flu each year and that includes the winter months of which Covid has only been present for one month of winter so far. I have mentioned this fact and provided references twice before on here so not doing it again. Please stop spreading misinformation.
Well said

I would say its a little easier for her as she doesn't have to fund her own decisions, they are funded by the UK as a whole. The decisions that affect the UK economy are made by Johnson and Sunak so its slightly easier for her. If Scotland were independent I am sure she wouldn't find making these decisions quite so easy.
So she has to make the decisions not knowing what funding will be given and having no power toincrease the funding, Johnson can make them knowing what funding he has and can get, yet he always behind the curve. The infections in the south and and England in general he's weeks late to the decision.

The UK's coronavirus alert level will be raised from 4 to 5 for the first time, government sources have said.

Level 5 or "red" means there is a "material risk of healthcare services being overwhelmed", compared to Level 4 when transmission of the virus is "high or rising exponentially".

The COVID-19 alert level refers to the threat of the epidemic and is separate from the tiering system in England.

It is set by the Joint Biosecurity Centre, which includes all four nations' chief medical officers, and determines how strict coronavirus restrictions should be.

Vaccines absolutely can eliminate COVID, by proxy of stopping transmission. The more prevalent the virus is, the more reproduction it is doing and thus the more mutations (strains) appear.
Think it depends what you mean by eliminate. The only disease we appear to have entirely eliminated by vaccination is Smallpox.
Be surprised if we eliminate this though we may well suppress it very successfully, but with it's apparent spread world wide plus the probability that animals may act as a reservoir means elimination is unlikely.

I remember reading a scientific article back in the Summer which mentioned that there is scarring on lung tissue that is like a muscle injury.

We see how muscle injuries affect the likes of Kompany and Kun, these lung injuries will surely have an impact n’all.

T5 = Highest possible. Until Jan 15th when T6 will be added.

My local synagogue took the decision to close a couple of weeks ago rather than wait to be told. Made sense despite no cases linking back to it since it reopened.

Had friends who decided individually to stop attending their various places of worship, too, but the fact that those centres remained open made that a more difficult decision for them.
