Well just back from work, what lockdown ?
Roads very busy, and a steady flow of people walking through the town. Nothing like the first lockdown where it took weeks to get use to being the only van on the road ! And the only people in town. No different to the last few months really, just minus the school kids ( probably cos of rain )

Yes more shops are shut but the usual second hand phone shop doing knock on the door.
Likely most businesses can’t simply close up over night. It’ll take until tomorrow to see more of an effect on the roads but worth remembering a lot of people still have to work. People in construction, emergency services etc.

Restaurants can continue offering a delivery or takeaway service - but pubs, bars and food-to-go outlets will no longer be allowed to sell takeaway alcohol.

Hairdressers, spas, zoos, hotels, golf courses, cafés and cinemas will also close under mandatory measures.

However, essential retailers such as supermarkets and pharmacies can stay open - as can garden centres and builders merchants.

Places of worship can also open for individual prayer and communal services, but they must obey social distancing rules and people can only attend with household and support bubble members.

Zoos and other animal attractions once again have to close.

Outdoor sports venues including gyms and tennis courts are also now closed until mid-February.

Outdoor team sports will not be permitted.

How is garden centres essential ?

Staying open

  • Food shops including off-licences, supermarkets, pharmacies, garden centres, building merchants and suppliers of building products
  • Market stalls selling essential items
  • Repair stores
  • Petrol stations, automatic car washes, vehicle repair and MOT services, bicycle shops, and taxi and vehicle hire businesses
  • Banks, building societies, post offices, short-term loan providers and money transfer businesses
  • Funeral directors
  • Laundrettes and dry cleaners
  • Medical and dental services
  • Vets and pet shops
  • Animal rescue centres, boarding facilities and animal groomers
From the mirror but everywhere the list can be found

Anyone know if we have actually banned flights from South Africa yet? And insist on isolation for anyone who has been there in recent weeks?

Even if it is still debateable how much it might compromise a vaccine or if the vaccine can be modified afterwards anyway it would be idiotic not to do everything possible to keep it out given that we have one of our own on a spree everywhere already.

Not that I do not trust our government to do sensible things like that which any sane nation would do. Just checking.

I agree its utterly bizarre that garden centres are considered essential?

It doesn't become Law until parliament vote on it on Wednesday, business won't have had time to tell their staff what their situation is

No. But Gove has stated we may change our tact on flights coming in.

I don’t understand this “self isolation” move either. How utterly naive do you have to be to believe people will follow it. A prime example is Zara Holland - went to Barbados, tested positive, tried to dodge the isolation period over thand board the plane but thankfully the authorities stopped her. She tried to escape and now she’s to appear in court. Had she succeeded in boarding the plane, she’d have passed it on to everyone around her and sailed through Heathrow with the virus. And then we wonder why we’re in the mess that we’re in.

It becomes law after midnight tonight.
You should follow the new rules from now, and they will become law in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Parliament will meet – largely remotely – later that day.

To be fair, it is a concern. Just hope they know either way soon.

I wonder as well, if the strain does turn out to weaken the impact of vaccines, that this perhaps won't be so bad news for Pfizer and Moderna but potentially terrible news for AZ as it has a lower efficacy to begin with? Ie could a vaccine which is 95% efficacy become 70% against this new strain however one which is 63% becomes only 38%...for example?

Now we can see the pattern of England only deaths in hospital across the pre and post Christmas period a little more clearly here is the current daily toll on the actual date of death across the past three weeks.

Obviously deaths still get added for some time in ones and twos (there were a couple from early November added today) but I will take it to 31 December as that is the last date we have five full days worth of numbers and so a fairly clear picture of the final number give or take a few still to be added.

Will show the total at 5 days and the current total after all add ons:

DATE /// 5 DAY TOTAL /// CURRENT TOTAL AFTER ALL ADD ONS SINCE

11 Dec 234 /// 274

12 Dec 261 /// 288

13 Dec 256 /// 274

14 Dec 278 /// 286

15 Dec 300 /// 309

16 Dec 241 /// 263

17 Dec 287 /// 318

18 Dec 269 /// 302

19 Dec 267 /// 283

20 Dec 292 /// 309

21 Dec 338 /// 352

22 Dec 305 /// 337

23 Dec 293 /// 331

24 Dec 239 /// 324 Note big catch ups after Christmas due to lack of reporting over Xmas/New Year.

25 Dec 309 /// 389

26 Dec 354 /// 404

27 Dec 371 /// 403

28 Dec 358 /// 384

29 Dec 378 /// 408

30 Dec 372 /// 397

31 Dec 381 .......... Only 5 day data up to here.

As you can see there is a steady upward track and all of these last 7 days will likely be over 400 within a week or so.

1117 died in England hospitals from Covid over Christmas Eve/Christmas Day/Boxing Day.

So many tragic Christmases.

For completeness current numbers for next four days are:-

1 Jan 338 after 4 days

2 Jan 333 after 3 days

3 Jan 244 after 2 days

4 Jan 67 after 1 day

No real sign of anything better on the horizon sadly.

Absolutely. And the 12 week wait between doses might need a rethink too.

Awful that they haven't included Nurseries in the school's shutdown, some people can still send their kids whilst they're sat at home .
Madness
Your post insinuates that people are just sat at home letting other people look after their kids.
Cost of nurseries i doubt very much.

Very judgemental. People still have to earn a living and put food on the table you know.
