It’s the biggest single early cause for where we are with death numbers. At the start of each rise, being an island where closing borders is fucking piss easy compared to countries that have multiple borders with other countries and many roads in and out to other countries, we should have immediately closed our borders.

It’s a big reason why Aus and NZ have had such an easy ride.

yes we (and the government I support) dropped a huge bollock I think with hindsight.

An island is infinitely more simple to protect than landlocked borders. We can't even stop dinghies full of illegals getting here let alone police our ports and airports properly. Monumental fuck up not shutting down our borders 10 months ago

There are pages and pages of the same font and case, and even your posts have a lot of info, and your HEADLINES catch my eye on a page and make your posts easier to find and read.

It’s only the same as many books, articles and newspaper columns where all their headlines, chapter titles, headings and subheadings are in UPPER CASE.

Keep it up pal.
Just do it in bolder font like the premier league fixture thread. Can't remember who does it though:-)

Unfortunately our government underestimated this virus, they thought that as other countries went into hiding they could keep everything open and make a few quid for U.K. plc. Hindsight is a beautiful thing but closing borders back in February and then propping up airlines and tourism etc would have been a lot easier than where we are now.

Didn't Rabb say last April that it was easy for New Zealand to close their borders as they are an island.

Not convinced it would, the virus was already in the country by February, and while it may have delayed it it would still have spread in our highly populated cities in a country where people travel between cities just going about their jobs, not to mention goods and people travellling all over the european mainland for their jobs. Yes we are and island physically but we aren’t really.
Also at the time there was no idea how long we would need to cut ourselves off for back in February, we didn’t know if there would be a vaccine.

Its not been publicised so as there is a small who ha about throwing vaccine away here goes, according to a district nurse friend of mine who is doing shifts giving out the virus...
O-AZ Vaccine vials contain 10 shots not 5 like The Pfizer vaccine and you can only get 11 out of one if you are very, very careful - there is less waste in them. Only an absolute expert in giving jabs can do it.
You're also, quite rightly, not allowed to give a bit from one vial and a bit from another for batch testing and tracking purposes.

If they had gone earlier with the lockdown it would have saved a lot more people. We could see the slow car crash happening in Italy and the U.K. government were slow to act. Australia and New Zealand are not travel hubs like the U.K. is, only now we are testing arrivals in airports 10 months into this is mind boggling.

Agree an earlier lockdown would have saved lives, agree too we should have been testing arrivals much earlier too.

If they fulfil their promise to get to all over 65 by end of February I will be delighted and they will win back a lot of kudos. You would think they would not risk such a tight timetable if they were not reasonably sure they can pull it off. And it is rather important to get there if these variants are coming thick and fast and tweaks to the vaccines become necessary as they are going to set the world back weeks or a few months however fast they can react.

Though rather a lot rests on how efficacious the Oxford vaccine proves in real life as we will be primarily vaccinating with that in coming weeks.
Clinical trials are done in 'real-life' so we should know they work although when you run small trials in different countries applying different protocols in each it becomes difficult to know exactly what you have got. The picture is even more confused by the decision to use a delayed dosing regime although the motive seems good.

There should be a quarantine / isolate app that you must install on your smart phone while you have to quarantine. This would help make sure idiots couldn't breach quarantine or isolation rules. It would allow you to be tracked to not leave your home and allow staff to check you were where you say you are.
Apps like this have kept the virus under control in Taiwan, South Korea etc and have clearly saved tens of thousands of lives.
Not in this country though. It violates your right to break the rules and kill someone else apparently.

There are no words to describe this government and this is just one of the things they got massively wrong. I hope to see mass investigations and following resignations when we’re out this mess

Maybe but the Labour Party is just as incompetent. Their officials are fortunate that they weren't in power as they'd have done no better. Politicians are mediocre. As soon as the Soviet Union collapsed, ideology disappeared from politics and we are left with careerists. These careerists start their careers in student unions usually when they realise that they aren't going to be the high-flyers that mummy and daddy expected so they stand for the NUS instead and start writing for the college paper. Then you get a job in the New Statesman or Spectator and a run at a safe electoral seat. If you have some charisma ideally gained from your time at Public School all the better.

Couldn’t you just go out without your phone, I do regularly. Or even put the app on another device.

Yes we should have gone earlier but that is a SAGE decision that the government chose not to overrule. The minutes of Sage meetings that were published clearly showed Cummings was pushing for the decision to be made for 2 weeks before it was made.
SAGE also didn't push for mandatory masks till the weight of evidence was clear because it wasn't in the pandemic plan either.
So they aren't perfect.

Well you could but if you don't answer it when they check on it (or ring them back within 10 mins) you get picked up and taken to an isolation hostel because you can't be trusted.

is Cummings a baddy or a goody now. It’s all so confusing

It would appear there will be a Pfizer vaccine shortage for a couple of weeks at the end of January as they change production lines in Belgium to ramp up production.
Causing ructions in Europe apparantly
