Couldn't say one way or the other but my son had every one of the main symptoms including loss of smell and taste over new year last year. So wouldn't be surprised that it was around then and he 'd had it.

It was spread in Europe mainly via skiers who were on the slopes early in the New Year. If the virus had existed and mutating for months by this time last year we would know.

If the original version existed and was less deadly why was it not happening like that in China where we know it existed in late Autumn 2019. That would have been the strain exported as all these mutations come when it is well established. The first strain was highly infectious by standards of these things Why it spread globally so fast,

It is natural people will try to retrofit one of the many winter viruses into being Covid. Human nature to do so, But if Covid existed months before the outbreak we know happened it would not be top secret. It would have been obvious.

I do agree with you but as others have said something was knocking about earlier, from my own experience on Chinese New Year we had drinks around the Chinese area after the game meeting my wife there.

She's was rough as hell from just after then through and past the Villa game at Wembley, she was going to spend time with my son & partner in Oxfordshire while we went to the game but was too poorly to travel.

Had she have had the same symptoms after going to Wembley I'd be convinced she'd have caught it in London.

I think there were some other winter nasties doing the rounds in late 2019 and early 2020. I've said on here before I thought I had covid wrongly diagnosed as pneumonia in the last week of Jan 20, but having now had covid this Jan I realise they were quite different.
 
Another death in the family from covid, this time my Mother’s cousin.
 
England hospital deaths only slightly down week to week but up significantly again in the NW split.

681 - with 88 from NW versus 710 with 70 last week.

So at 13% which it has been for a few days. Up but not a lot on the 10/11 it was up to past few days. And you would expect deaths to be falling more in the areas where they had the most cases before numbers started falling.

So still looks as if we have passed the peak but that the NW is the slowest to come out of that peak. As supported by the case data and hospital patient numbers in past week.

Frustrating though seeing this and knowing as of today that one third of the the vaccine supply is being diverted FROM the NW to the areas where deaths and hospitalisations are dropping faster.

Absolutely, I don't see why some seem to think they should be vaccinated before essential things like premier league football. Teachers and now police apparently would happily see themselves vaccinated first while our brave elite level footballers risk their lives just to bring a little cheer to our homes.

Scotland data:

60 deaths - was 76 last week

994 cases - was 1307 last week

5.6% positivity - was 9.3% last week

1952 patients (down 6) - was 2085 last week

142 on ventilator icu (down 2) - was 159 last week.

Again looking good all round.
 
My dad 75 and got cancer had the Pfizer vaccine two weeks ago, tested positive today as did my mum and brother. Clearly two weeks is not long enough to provide immunity.
 
Scotland vaccination update:

543, 370 first doses given - 27. 515 yesterday - up from 24. 197 day before

7638 second doses given - 543 yesterday - up from 312 day before


Other details :- 96% of older care home residents vaccinated - 90% of non older care home residents vaccinated.

68% of over 80s living in the community vaccinated

85% of older resident care home staff vaccinated. 74% for non older resident care home staff.

230,000 NHS staff on front line list targeted to be vaccinated has been exceeded with 246, 803 front line and social care workers now vaccinated.

You need 2-3 weeks , being vaccinated is not the silver bullet ,they could have caught it when they went for the jab , lots more people than a lot of them have seen in a year

I'm getting there mate, thanks. Was back at work this week. Generally feel ok but there are occasions I'm a bit short of breath. This might be to do with lack of any physical exercise combined with eating garbage and general state of unfitness since I've not been able to exercise and am cautious about getting back into it too fast. I hope it's that. My intention is next weekend to do a slow paced treadmill jog for a mile or so and see how my body responds, and build up from there. The most I'm doing just now is going out the odd walk here and there, so I've not really tested myself it that makes sense.


Keep taking it easy mate. My experience certainly isn't the same for everyone, perhaps it'll take you a little while longer but there's nothing wrong with that. I'd suggest to do what you feel that you can without pushing yourself too hard. A couple of bits and bobs from the supermarket will be easier than a trolley load of stuff for example. Hopefully the chestyness you're experience will ease in time. You've made good progress from how you were by the sounds of things, so that's really positive. Glad to hear you're on the mend even if you're not fully recovered as yet, you'll get there.

Sounds remarkably similar.
I lost my appetite during the worse part of the illness but when it was back up I’ve not been eating particularly healthily...at least in the evening (more comfort foods). Still hammer the fruit though so not entirely savage.

You may have hit the nail re the fitness...holed up for three weeks almost comatose isn’t the greatest for ones fitness levels.
I’m usually an ebullient ball of energy....I’d climb trees if I see a decent one.
The mental side has been compounded by having to get use to living alone in a small flat but great lessons learned. I’ll soon fire up but it’s tough with what’s going on in personal life.

opefully catch you on the running thread soon but I’m definitely not going gung ho.
I’ll know when I’m ready.

i had the pfizer vaccine and they told me three weeks

Might not have stopped them catching it but will still hopefully prevent serious illness

We are only past the peak because we are locked down. Once lockdown is lifted, numbers will rise from a high baseline. This is in for the year, I feel
