#7 | Raheem Sterling - 2020/21 Performances

I said this two months ago on here and it hasn’t changed

I’ve no concerns about Sterling
He’d always start on my team. You know what you’re getting
He’s gonna miss chances and fuck up good opportunities
But the good outweighs the bad
He’s also never going to drop his head and will keep going to get plenty of goals and assists, and always is a threat to the opposition

he’s been pretty much the same the past 4 years in this respect
He’ll do plenty of bad and some good in a match and therefore deserves his place
 
If you take the brilliant headed goal out of the equation vs Arsenal, his performance was no worse tonight than at the weekend - and it wasn’t good.

It speaks volumes that the best thing he has done in the past 2 games is score a header that he shouldn’t have had a sniff at. He’s a highly rated footballer at the end of the day, and whilst his movement off the ball is excellent, he needs to rediscover his touch and start performing with his feet in order to justify his place in the team.

We can’t continue to watch him consistently waste opportunities by running the ball straight into defenders (or out of play), without calling his place in the team into question.
 
He's been awful for far too long......his control of the ball is shite,he seems devoid of ideas and nearly always chooses the wrong option,and he lacks aggression.I genuinely think we would be a better team without him in it.

As for the armband....wow,that experiment has failed massively as on the pitch he doesnt appear to display any leadership qualities

I don't think he was a great deal worse than normal last night,but for some reason it seems the penny has finally dropped with a few.

We could find a far more consistent and dependable player for half the wages we are paying him,same applies to mahrez.Finding buyers would be an issue,but i also think both players would benefit personally with a fresh start.
 
Not because of his performance today, it's a thought that's been with me for quite a few months now - I think we can do better than Sterling. His numbers end up being good, nothing to argue about, but I think they are also very misleading. I for one would take Sancho in his place without thinking twice. It probably will not happen but I will not cry if we sell him for 100 + - M and go for someone else
 
I find him beyond frustrating and would bench him for sure. In fact I would have done so weeks ago - he's in no way deserving of a automatic start.

It's no longer a case of "well he messes up sometimes but the good outweighs the bad". He messes up ALL the time. I don't even get excited when he's through on goal anymore, I just yawn and think here we go again, another fuck up. We cannot carry on with his performances like this.

In fact I will say this: We will not win the Champions League with him in the side playing like he is. When the chips are down in the biggest competition, when you're playing the big guns like Real or Barca or Bayern* etc, you're usually going to get few chances and you need to take them. You cannot be relying on a player who is going to fuck it up 9 times out of 10.


*And yes I know they are a shadow of their former selves but just watch, they will step up when needed to.

So according to you, you can see he isn't good enough, but we will get 100m + for him, make your mind up, sums up the amount of shite posted on bluemoon,

Individual stats becoming widely available in recent years has given casual viewers, who know next to nothing about the game a loud voice within it. It is easy for them to look at G/A stats and determine that X player is good/bad/great etc, without ever having to look any deeper.

You only have to look on SSN any given day to see things like Wan Bissaka being top of the most tackles stats. To the casual viewer, this equates to him being a great defender, whereas we all know that while he is very good in 1v1 situations, he is an absolute cart-horse for everything else.

City fans don't/won't want to hear it, but Sterling is one of the biggest beneficiaries in this stats-driven era. You cant argue with a guy that bags 30 goals a season from out wide, and the majority will be happy to forgive him for his weaknesses if he delivers this. The problem this season is that as you say, his performance levels are extremely poor (he actually stands out like a sore thumb in what is a technically proficient side) and his goals have somewhat dried up.

When scoring consistently, he finds himself being elevated into what some perceive these days as world-class status. Without goals, he is borderline joining AWB in cart-horse territory.

Peps reactions on the touchline, the substitution, and then the comments after the game should leave nobody under any illusions that Pep is not happy with Sterling. Pep very rarely calls out any of his players in public, or references specific negative actions within a game. Last night he could have easily just spoken about how great the professional 2-0 away win was, but he made sure he called out certain actions in the game re Sterling.

His current level of performance is nowhere near good enough. Hopefully Pep calling him out, will have the desired impact.
 
If it was me I'd pick from the follow across the front 3.
--- Foden (can't be faulted)
--- Jesus (awesome interplay)
--- Torres (hopefully he is as good as he looks)
--- Aguero (great to have him back)
--- KDB (prefer him as a forward for now)

Sterling can be great at times but for a while why not let the others carry the load.

Mahrez for all my complaints about him could actually be a great super sub.

I don't want to see Bernardo as a front 3 player. He is perfect as he is, drifting in. Just like Gundogan.
 
No defending his performance this game, it's abysmal. Hopefully it's a blip. Personally still think he will come good for us eventually.

Wan Bissaka being top of the most tackles stats.
the stat they keep showing is attempted tackles ,lol what the fuck does that mean, he might not of made a tackle because he's shit but attempt the most ?
 
He is not playing that well lately but i know he is going to turn the things around he is fundamental for us and he knows that.

Just for a laugh can you give me a list of players who are 'far more consistent and dependable' and also score 30 goals a season?

Last night was hugely frustrating from Raheem again. The recurring theme is missing big chances in these key games - Lyon is the obvious one, but there's frequent examples.

Three times in the first half he either made the wrong decision or killed an attack dead. Whilst we had control, BMG did create two openings at 0-0 that could have easily led to a goal. Pep (and everyone else) will be fully aware that better teams will punish those and we'll pay the price for poor finishing again. We may only create 3 key chances in a game and they have to be nailed.

It was the same on Sunday. Great header for his goal, but he had a chance 30 seconds before he fluffed and then after 5 minutes he made a mess of the one on one with Leno. 2-0 after 7 mins is game over.

The margins are fine - Rodri's error in the final minute last night showed it too.

I'm not exactly keen on criticising a player who does contribute so many goals, but he's clearly capable of a higher level of play than currently. That's in both his finishing and overall contribution to the attack.

If he hits form and starts putting away these chances, then he's one of the best around. It's just finding that level - I hope he can.
