New Champions League format

I've got a wild idea if the current format is getting stale, how about the champions of all 55 uefa countries plus the previous champion start in round 1 with no co-efficient bias, 8 teams get drawn a bye, the others play each other in a 2 legged tie winner through to the next round until we reach a winner crowned champion of Europe.

Ahhh but that doesn't keep the rich rich does it.
It wouldn't even need a name change strangely enough.

This would be an absolutely shit idea, and you only need to think it through for a minute to realise that.

There is no sporting value in excluding Barcelona in order to include Tre Fiori, champions of 55th placed country San Marino. There's absolutely no point. No one would watch it, they can't host a televised game, good players would be injured by part timers and it would be a double figures scoreline.

Bayern smashing through the champions of Albania, Belarus, Malta and Hungary before finally getting a half interesting draw in Ajax or someone is just a shit tournament.

There is a very good reason the old European Cup format was ditched and it's because most of the games were foregone conclusions - and that was 35 years ago when some Eastern European club having a 50,000 seater stadium made them a rich club who could compete with the champions of Germany or Italy

And by the way it would absolutely ruin all those domestic leagues, because whoever got into the first edition would get so much money, they'd never be caught - which is what's already happened in a bunch of the smaller leagues who get CL places.

Seems like they are purely in the spit-balling dumb ideas stage -

Agnelli also stressed that football must think of ways to attract younger viewers in an increasingly crowded marketplace. “We could imagine a subscription for the last 15 minutes of a specific game,” he said. “The attention span of today’s kids and tomorrow’s spenders is completely different to the one I had when I was their age.
“If you take golf, if it’s interesting at all, it’s only the last six holes on the final day. You are not going to watch the whole thing on the TV unless you are a hardcore fan.”

On transfers bans between clubs in the same competition, would it not force up transfer fees for teams looking to recruit players outside of the champions league as the pool of players you can buy gets smaller?

I can’t see Madrid and Barca voting for this as being able to take the very best players in Europe away from the better teams has been their policy for years.

what will happen is if that club Agrees with the sale all is good! This means likes of us who want to buy a Sterling of Liverpool won’t happen because Liverpool won’t agree with it where as selling him to Madrid they will say yeah that’s fine. That’s how they manipulate it into the cosy history clubs advantage!

Other thing what happens if one of the champions league club wants to offload a player? Would they want to go and play for a club that doesn’t have champions league football? Surely it’s a restriction of work, it’s an absolute pigs ear they’ve put together.

Simon Stone so be warned.

Basics...

Increase to 36 teams each team to play 10 games against "teams of varying strengths".

2 legged play off games after that.

Reducing domestic leagues to 18 teams (PL have already said no to this).

2 "wildcard" teams decided on co-efficient.

How do you play 10 games when there are 36 teams?

4x groups of 9 = 36. If you play the 8 other teams in your group of 9 you have 8 games?

If you play 10 teams in a group of 11 then the total No of teams would be a multiple of 11.

Anyone else struggling to get passed this.

6 groups of 6 maybe

See another one of his ideas is to prohinit transfers between champions league clubs.
Claims it will help the "smaller " clubs financially
EU, restriction of trade, Bosman mk 2. You can't ban someone from taking up different employment of their choice.

Looking at the BBC reports about Rangers. For a relatively new club, they've won a record amount of titles so they must be a shoo-in?
I listened to McCall yesterday. He said, they were sent down to the 3rd. Of course they weren't. The only reason was they had to 're apply as they were a new entity. They were never relegated. The club folded under it's debts. Still, 55 in 10 years is awesome. Imagine it had happened to us, do you think the Daily Record woukd have said we were going for 55? Would the Rangers fans? No they wouldn't, because you can't have your cake without paying for it and eat it. They claim we didn't get 9 because they weren't there. Only on Scotland and only if you are the Gers.

Came across somewhere where it was 6 groups of 6, 5 matches each home and away.

1st 2 teams in each group go through along with 4 best 3rd placed teams, giving a last 16 which would be played as is now.

I'm laughing at the plan that all teams that qualify can't buy players off each other.

It's completely unworkable and would be illegal. Especially in the likes of Spain where the right to buy out your contract is protected under law.

It's not in "groups" it's one group of 36, and you are drawn against 10 of them was my understanding.

I find this really interesting, the new format and 2 byes is meh, Juve, Bayern, PSG and the Spanish 2 haven't been with 20 points of missing out on qualification so this only applicable the English sides.

The transfer stuff is mad, the debt is out of control so I can see the reasoning behind it but on the other side these clubs then have assets with no value. If City wanted to sell Sterling the market would be about 6 clubs, 2 of which will be rivals for CL spots so they won't sell to them. That leaves the likes of Villa or Valencia. The net result is transfer fees fall of a cliff which is a good thing. I just can't see the teams agreeing to it or it been legal within EU employment law.

Contray to what others have said it would also make it easier for Newcastle Everton types to grow and challenge. If they came into money they would have a free run at players surplus at CL clubs. It would be quicker and cheaper than what City done.
