I think history will judge it and say it was all done too hastily from a UK perspective but what puzzles me is we shouldn’t have been caught out by EU import rules (given we’ve been implementing them for the past 40 years).

Actually, we can. There is a lot we could do to make life easier for British business and trading with the EU, we just choose not to. The calculation appears to be that perpetual outrage at the EU is better electorally than making life easier for British businesses.

Govt policy is governed by parading its hostility to the EU, this then leads to the situation where we refuse a transition extension that applies to both sides and end up with a transition extension that favours the EU, thus allowing ministers and the media to fume at the ‘bureaucratic madness of EU rules designed to punish an independent Britain (copyright D Frost)’ etc, etc.

The rhetoric of the UK Govt is strikingly similar to the nationalist output of the Turkish Govt. Turns out, Turkey didn’t have to join the EU, the UK joined up with Turkey.
 
Hearing that BBC News confirms Johnson met hardline anti-EU, anti-Dublin Unionist leader while snubbing meeting with leader of rest of N Ireland community.

This, of course, will absolutely end well for all concerned.

What can we do now? Other than get ok with it?

Extensions and the such...That horse has long since bolted - might be able to do something on financial services still thou?

Attempt to negotiate entry into the Single Market and the Customs Union so we get get rid of the sanctions we have imposed on ourselves. They probably won’t have us though.

Oh they would, they’d love to have us back make no mistake. Germany and France need all the help that can get in footing the EU bill. But the terms would be worse than before, I doubt they would try and force us to adopt the euro though.

Who knows, if brexit turns out to be a shit idea then yeah we might well look to go back.

Hate to break it to you but Brexit already has turned out to be a shit idea. The only thing stopping the government doing anything concrete about it is that they’d rather just lie to the Brexit supporters rather than address the problems. At some point they won’t be able to get with that strategy any longer.
 
I think they persist with the lies because that way they feel safe in the world they have constructed in their own heads - also note he refers to lorries not actual weight or volume. Each of those lorries could be half empty - they could be a Luton sized Transit

Negotiate better access to the European markets. Reach agreement on Sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) measures so that we can dispense with a lot of the health certificates and vet checks for example. There is a lot we can do to facilitate trade with Europe, our issue is that we don’t want to facilitate trade, we want the exact opposite for ‘fear’ of being tied to the EU, hence agricultural and fishing industries being left high and dry.

The same applies to Services, the effect of which has been hidden by Covid and lockdown. Fashion industry, music industry all sectors in which we excel are going to struggle. Financial Services is also out in the cold with no sign of the EU granting equivalence. New York, yes. London, no.

The deal is not sustainable, it’s only purpose is to sever ties with Europe. Even kids get screwed over with schemes like Erasmus axed in favour of a low budget version.

The reason Brexiteers get labelled as xenophobic or anti-European is because that is what Brexit has become. It may be not what you voted for, but it’s what you ended up with.

Its all well and good saying negotiate but Johnson and his Band of Bellends are hell bent on doing the polar opposite. In my opinion the shit will be hitting the fan and the lies no longer working before they will contemplate doing that. Whats to stop the EU playing hardball then too? They will have been hit by this folly - why not let it destroy Johnson and his Govt and negotiate with grown ups when the country comes to its senses and installs them? Wait until JSA is paid in volumes of unsold shell fish and the who country is sick of eating pork and lamb we can't export before even acknowledging our plight? Don't forget the EU 27 have 27 other member states to trade with.

It will never drop in the Express.
I regularly read articles from it for the laughs. Today’s classic is the poll amongst readers asking if EU fishing boats should be banned from UK waters immediately. 98% in favour. If they did a poll asking whether we should stop all trade with the EU I’m fairly sure they’d get a similar answer. A huge number of the population are totally brainwashed. Every time we get bad news about trade the reaction is always to try and make it worse.

Agreed. The Express will always relate it to Diana in some way. She wouldn’t have died if she had‘ve been in a British tunnel.
 
If Foxy the Showman's reference to Covid and not Brexit being the culprit for trade with the EU falling off a cliff how come's trade with Non - EU countries was up 1.7% ? Is there only Covid in the EU?
