so Boris expects the current wave on mainland Europe to come to the UK; "on the continent right now you can see, sadly, there is a third wave under way, and ...previous experience has taught us that that when a wave hits our friends, it I’m afraid washes up on our shores as well. And I expect that we will feel those effects in due course."

hmm. i'd rather got the impression that the wave in mainland europe was lagging behind our kent variant-driven wave of Dec/Jan? he is saying we are to expect another wave? as that would mean goodbye to roadmap as we know it.
Here we go again

That's fantastic but @cleavers said on here a couple of weeks ago that he knew of someone who died of Covid some time after they had their second jab. Now I'm not sure how many weeks after their second vaccination it was - it could be that they were unlucky enough to catch it before full efficacy kicked in?
They had their 2nd jab in early January, and died in early March, having been in hospital free from covid. It seems that they caught it there (in a part of the hospital not close to a covid ward), recovered, went home (retirement place my parents live), developed a serious infection, tested positive, was admitted to a covid ward, and died within a few days.

The person was 95, and to my knowledge was fairly active for 95, which caused the first hospital admission.

Again, this makes absolutely no sense.

Last year it was true simply because we sat and watching things pick up in Europe before we did anything here so we followed what they did.. but since the turn of the year we’ve gone on completely different paths - they’ve had schools/hospitality etc open to varying degrees depending on which country and have barely vaccinated anyone, whilst we’ve been in an incredibly strict 3 month long lockdown and vaccinated over half the adult population.

There are some very worrying comments coming out from the government/scientists at the minute about our future.

Sounds like the “road map” is getting fucked off.

It might just be a bit of politics at play given the EUs recent threats. He maybe saying it like "we're still going to be effected by this and that's why we still need our vaccines". This is true, but you'd think we'll be better off numbers wise due to the fact we've largely protected the most vulnerable.
i think it does rather sound like politicking to me

i wouldn't go as far as your last line, i think it's going to be largely politics and making himself look good when it doesnt happen to anywhere near the same degree, but it's a pretty see through play by Johnson. he is never this precautious, ever. straight from the behavioral 'nudging' playbook perhaps.

Nightclubs reopen without restrictions in Israel tonight, bars and restaurants been open for 2 weeks. Why can’t we expect to be back to normal by September if they are pretty much there already?
Uk is an international travel hub. Tel Aviv is not.

That is a sad story, and as I said I thought the statistic unlikely.

But dying of Covid is often different from dying with Covid. I expect particularly at 95. As unhappily I know from within my own family.

I think there is no way we will have a “restrictions free” life by 21st June like his road map promises.

Of course there will be easing of restrictions between now and then, but going off what’s coming out of the government, it sounds like we’re being buttered up for another year like last year with lockdowns coming back in the winter.

England hospital deaths:

By regions:- London 12, Midlands 11, North West 7, South East 7, East 5, NE & Yorkshire 4, South West 2

10 in University College London is only place in double figures.

Most in NW is 3 in Liverpool. The other 4 one each in Manchester, Morecambe, Tameside and Warrington

christ no, of course not for June 21st and all restrictions gone. the cynic in me says they are looking for the balance of economic prosperity and control, a modern authoritarian wet dream, but that's not for this thread. as for the roadmap i think they'll get through most of what they outlined by July but the travel, perhaps major stadium events, conditions around gigs etc and perhaps some mask stuff will remain. dunno, just guessing. Whether the public adhere to it in the height of summer is another matter.

Indeed.
I'm not hugely fussed with having to wear one and I quite enjoyed it when I upgraded to sleeker cotton versions to match the rest of my outfits.
But I had yet another moment in the supermarket check out yesterday when I struck up a conversation with the woman serving me and struggled to hear each other so conversations are a bit stunted.
This is literally the few moments I'm in the store so no biggy...just becoming a little jaded now.
Conversations in shops etc are a nightmare for me. I have to wear glasses, hearing aids, and mask. Coupled with uncut hair, my ears don't have the capacity, so i remove hearing aids. In our pharmacy, the assistants wear masks behind a perspex screen.
"What is your address" they ask when I collect my prescription.
"Half past parsnips," I reply.

Haha.
Ronnie Corbett likes this post ;)

Scotland data:

0 deaths - was 0 last week

359 cases - was 456 last week

3.7% positivity - was 4.7% last week

353 in hospital- UP 9 on yesterday - was 447 last week

33 ventilated icu - UP 2 on yesterday - was 40 last week

Though down week to week the hospital numbers are up on the day. Slightly concerning though Monday is the day that might happen and often has. So not much to worry about.

Apparently testing numbers are half last Monday too. Though the positivity went down a quarter. Which looks odd.

Yeh that's what I think too, seen it mentioned before but don't really understand the thinking behind it. There should be no third wave with the restriction map we have in place plus the vaccines.

Europe on the other hand are going to struggle for a while longer, which made the whole pausing the AZ vaccine even more ridiculous IMO.
See, Boris knows what he's doing. Just like Trump with his 'China flu' rhetoric, anything to deflect.

The Uk has by far the highest death toll in Europe and has had much stricter restrictions in place for a lot longer.

I'm in Valencia where my two kids haven't missed a day of school since September and where, apart from 4/5 weeks after Christmas, shops, bars, hairdressers, restaurants etc have all remained open. But yeah, let's all blame europe and the EU for the UK mess.

I know where I'd rather have been these past few months even with a tentative approach to vaccines.

That perfectly describes me as well, mask getting caught up in my glasses and hearing aids and not having a clue what people are talking about. I end up asking them to shout at me because I can hear nothing and can't see their lips move.

Went into BM's the other week and behind the mask and perspex I was served by another deaf person, it was the coming together of the perfect storm ;) I have tried to offest the problem by just handing the cashiers a fistful of cash and have them count it out from my palm like I am a child again.
