Coronavirus (2021) thread

Seeing the continued success of the vaccine rollout and the covid numbers lowering I’ve been getting really joyful about the current developments lately. And then I fuck myself over by of course looking through Twitter and seeing many health experts saying the vaccine isn’t a silver bullet and social distancing will have to be a thing for years and it again puts me in a foul mood. I keep saying to myself we’re very close to been in a much better, normal way of domestic life but if I go by the experts, seemingly that just isn’t going to happen. Don’t even know what to think anymore, brain is just fried at minute.

Fair point but those without an hospitality offer have gone OTT.

I would suggest that hospitality only businesses will suffer to a degree as people will be paying more accommodation. We wouldn't be going to a restaurant every night if charged £2k for accommodation.

It honestly wouldn't surprise me that there will be plenty of cancellations if some overseas destinations end up allowing holiday stays by late July August.
We're doing a UK self catering holiday, with 4 households getting together in Wales (us, my parents, and our kids and partners) in September.

It's a huge house, we've nearly enough bathrooms for one each, we're paying just over £2k for 2 weeks, so works out £500 per couple, in what amounts to a country mansion, in it's own grounds.

We'll eat out sometimes, and will do our own things through the day, as we have differing abilities across the group. We'll probably BBQ quite a bit (weather permitting).

I wouldn’t worry about Twitter idiots, there are some who’ve not give a fuck throughout but it’s also full of people thoroughly enjoying what’s going on and wanting it to continue

Deaths registered in the week ending 12th March were 605 fewer than the 5 year average, per the ONS.
This pandemic is over, and has been for some time now.

It’s never been about deaths.

it’s been about protecting the NHS and not having hospitals overwhelmed

The game changes when people know they’re vaccinated and safe.

I’m sticking 2 fingers up to not hugging and not standing next to mates when I know I, they, and everyone around us are protected.

Also, the risk of Stockholm syndrome is strong.

With the awareness around mental health issues these days I hope this is an aspect of psychological trauma that becomes well publicised, otherwise many people will be cowering away from normal and safe and pleasurable aspects of life for years to come.

Funnily enough, it was your post about Lampeter the other day that encouraged me to look at that area. We will be just the three of us. Had a look and the prices do not make it worthwhile. I may have a look at some more sights.

Most years we go up to North Norfolk with family or friends. Normally £700-£800 pw for a very nice house for 7 or 8 of us.

I once sat outside a pub by the river in Richmond on a glorious sunny day and Concorde flew overhead. It was a spectacular sight. Lovely place Richmond.

Ah. I guess that is one of the two pubs behind the town. Forgotten what they are called. When we used to watch Salford play London Broncos, we would always stay in a place above deli and go to those pubs. Everytime we went, the weather was amazing.

If you are down that way again, drive a bit further and go to Egham and Windsor. Lovely places to have a beer.

These experts are people that have probably never left university and whilst excelling in their field of epidemiology do not have to take into account economic and societal factors when making these decrees on twitter. The may not even appreciate the damage they are doing to people mentally as they aren’t feeling the sword of Damocles over their head as those of us whose livelihoods have been destroyed by the restrictions feel every time more doom and gloom is spouted.

However, in the real world, the politicians who are tasked with making decisions DO have to take in other factors than just preventing infections regardless of the consequences.

Whitty, Vallance and Boris were all at pains to say that elimination of covid is not realistic and has zero chance of happening and so whilst advice as to what is effective at reducing the prevalace is obviously taken into account, it is not going to be blindly followed. They effectively ruled out a medical end to the pandemic anytime soon and so that just leaves a societal end and so the governments focus will have to shift to how to manage us out of this period, taking into account each leg of the stool.

A Greek official suggested to think of it like a DJ changing a record. We won’t go from the miserable tune to a more uplifting tune straight away...there will be a period when the two tracks are mixed as one fades away (restrictions) and the volume of the other (normality) takes over.

What if you're a scratch DJ?

I have a lot of sympathy for kids and young people. Best years of their lives and their education has been severely impacted.

Educationally, I think a lot will catch up quickly (and there’s some that would actually have done really well in lockdown depending on the situation of the parents). It’s social interaction and the lack of it that’s been the real issue.

I feel very sorry for those in a level, gcse or first years though - my sons doing his GCSEs this year and it’s still not fully clear in a few subjects how the assessments are going to work.

This pandemic is world wide, and it's far from "over" (see europe), we have had a lockdown that has stopped transmission here, but it will come back if we just say it's "over", and only a fool can't see that.
This pandemic is over in the UK.
We have >40m either vaccinated or infected with this virus, of which all of the most at risk groups are included.
