In spite of my "promise" to Magicpole, I have to clarify my point about the coastline. The cost of "maintaining" (customs; fisheries protection; defence: environmental et al) the Scottish coastline would need to be divided by 5 million after independence rather than by 22 million (based on Scotland's coastline comprising roughly 33% of the UK's total coastline (after a quick look at a map)). A 450% increase.
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency spends about £360m per year. Assuming Scotland takes up a third of that, that's £120m or £24 per Scot instead of £5 per Brit so although you're right about the increase it's not exactly a deal breaker when that 450% increase amounts to just an extra £20.

Speaking as an outsider, morally, Scotland should have independence, they should be Masters of the own destiny even if they struggle financially.

As far as protecting their coastline, here in Australia we have a bigger coastline than America and there's only 25 million of us, we seem to do ok.
And we only have Basking sharks and other nice ones that don't eat you. Although, going into our coastal waters, being as cold as they are, will definitely kill you. I've died twice trying it.

Orcas aren't nice to seals. Just saying like.
Wild swimming in lochs and the sea is very bracing and good for mental health. Or so my Daughter in law tells me.

I think this would come under the shared services agreement. There are a number of things which would fall under this banner. It should be fairly straightforward to agree a contribution based on usage of the service which is well documented. You are right though, not a deal breaker and one of the thousands of things that would need to be thought through and agreed. Scotland would pay an annual contribution for these shared services.

The Orca is in its natural environment. I'm with the Big Yin when he said we don't belong there. Take a dive in and you soon get what he means, just before you go into shock and if lucky, get dragged out.

My wife was brought up in Dunbar. They had an open air swimming pool which if you know the place was just 200 yards west from where the new indoor swimming pool is now. Just under 'the glebe'. As it was completely open to waves crashing over the walls, it was freezing and I mean freezing. She used to spend the day in there as a child and loved it.

So don't give me your softy west coast 'its too cold'. ;-)

Everybody knows the Irish Sea/Atlantic is practically artic compared to the lukewarm bath the North Sea is.:)

I used to do the summer season open sea races series over here when I was a youngster, from about 13/14 years old onwards.
I played waterpolo outdoors every year in the best and worst of Irish summers, in unheated seawater pools.
Down where I bring the dog swimming now some of them are trying to convince me to get in again. There has been a huge increase in all age groups doing it all over winter, but I’ve gone soft I think. I haven’t got in.
I’m using the excuse that I’ll start in the summer and maybe keep it up through next winter.

I did scuba for years and know what 6-7 degrees feels like for the first dives of the season and it’s cold even with two layers of neoprene so I’m not enthusiastic about getting in in my pelt.
The Irish Sea is a good degree or so cooler than the west coast because of the Gulf Stream, so I’m sure the North Sea is an acquired taste and you’re welcome to it.

For any of you who have been in it, how long was it before you saw your balls again?

Well it's only been ten years, so any day now, hopefully.

Who would we pay an annual fee to? They are our waters. We would pay for our own.

I think the idea is that there will be a bunch of stuff that happens today that will continue to happen and we contribute to the cost of it as will other countries of the U.K. mainly non political.
it will form an annual payment by Scotland to the U.K. treasury. That’s certainly what was proposed by the SNP sponsored SGC report. It seems sensible.

This morning in Glasgow, immigration officers from London, tried to take an asylum seeking family into custody to probably deport them. News spread and the people did this. They shouted, give us back our neighbours. Thank you Glasgow, I fucking love the bones of you.

Can't believe they are doing this to an English family - you've not even secured another referendum yet.

Have to say your description sounds a bit different from the reports I read.
The good old idea that anything connected with immigration is bad or unfair. Of course it ramps up the angst and strength of feeling when it is suggested that it involves "a family" rather than 2 men, or when it is suggested they are "asylum seeking".
As for immigration officers from London...I assume it will be alot better when there is the Scottish Immigration Service...which I reckon may well be only a couple of years away!

Depends where you read the reports. It's basic rejection of a Tory racist immigration policy. You might not care about it, that's fine, we do. That's why the neighbours of those two guys stood there and said, fuck off. We didn't buy the Mail. Didn't read the demonising of people, didn't buy they were the problem. We know who the problem is. And it ain't asylum seekers. It's entitled Toffs whipping up hatred to keep people scared and stupid. We are neither. Today we showed it. And for that I am proud of my city.

I very much agree that it is all about where you get your media, whether you move from source to source , get different views and then make up your own mind.
After all that is what we should all do.
But it is interesting how things and different views and information gets posted and then gets passed on.
In your first post you refer to those detained as being a family and also asylum seekers and yet in your response you then agree with one news report that says that it was 2 males. In one report I read, it referred to those involved as asylum seekers, in another it referred to immigration offences.
Immigration, of course is a hugely emotive issue, always polarises opinions simply by the fact that it deals directly with peoples lives. Often those who need the greatest amount of help and support. In which case I think it needs to be reported and researched as thoroughly as possible.
As for the policy...and I am very very far from a Tory supporter, but appreciate that there does need to be some sort of policy. In this case I think the policies in place have been put in place by both Labour & Tories...As I said previously, it will be very interesting to see what the SNP put in place when they get independence.

While I share your sentiment about this, I think it's a bit of a stretch to paint Glasgow as the epicentre of diversity and tolerance. The fact is if either of those two blokes were Catholic / protestant in the wrong bit of town at certain times they would probably get stabbed.
