Jack Grealish

Tbh, away from the discourse about his character (which I agree is questionable btw - heard there are other demons in his closet that haven't yet come out too heh) the main issue for me is where does he play tbh. I just can't see any space in the squad at all for Grealish unless someone leaves. Genuinely. Who will? It would have to be a Sterling or a Mahrez type. A big player basically.
I think it's more likely as possibly the long-term successor to Fernandinho. I think Pep has plans for Grealish that might surprise a few people.

I don't need to give Grealish anything. He doesn't play for City. And considering the fact that there's people desperate to throw multiple title winners at City under the bus for Jack, I'm totally fine with going the other way.
Precious as fuck

Mate I think that's a wild shout. Nothing about Grealish's game suggests tough defensive midfielder - he spends a lot of time on the floor for one. Are we really going to turn that kind of player into a defensive midfielder? Grealish is an excellent footballer and very highly gifted technically, but he's clearly not a defender.

At times our midfield gets run over. For the way we play it’s our Achilles heel. Imo we only control midfield with Bernie & Foden both in the team. Grealish will solidify the midfield leaving us solid defensively. Fern will continue to be used sparingly so we have room for jack.

You can never have enough good players. If the group is happy collectively and individually I don’t know why we are seeing a problem tbh.

Pep could not be any clearer when he says that the players need to be happy with their role or move on. It’s not easy to leave a club like city.

I’ve posted the same thing in this thread myself in the past and I can only think it’s us having one eye on the post-KDB/Gundo era. Grealish is certainly more Bernardo than he is Sterling so I think we would use him as a midfielder.

Maybe Foden’s emergence as such an effective winger caused a rethink this season too? Unless of course there is a departure we don’t know about yet.

He spends a lot of time on the floor because he's currently an attacker. That's how you buy free-kicks and develop progressive attacking situations. Obviously, if he were to play further back, such antics wouldn't be quite so necessary. He's as strong as fuck, a good tackler, and exceptional in tight spots. He's also a very hard worker and an obviously brilliant passer of the ball. I don't think that's a wild shout at all.

Yet he's considered "dog shit". In.cred.i.ble

I don't think Grealish is shit. I've said loads of times on this forum and in this thread that I rate him. He's been top for Villa this season and he has many attributes which would make him a player of interest to City.

But I also think that the squad we have has players better than him in the positions he plays, and for 75 million, that feels like a non-starter. Especially when you factor in his character flaws and issues.

In terms of characterising his numbers as dogshit - for me they are when you're talking about a club record fee for a player who is the main man at another club. Appreciate that it's a little on the blunt side and I could've been more diplomatic but my point stands about the numbers not justifying the fee.

Would I have grealish at City?
Absolutely, 100% I would. I know its all about opinions, but I personally rate him as easily one of the best players in the Premier league.
Whenever I've watched villa play, one of the things I enjoy is just watching grealish how he plays with the ball, he just never, ever gets tackled.
Apart from his control on the ball, dribbling etc his passing is top class, timing of the pass, weight of the pass and the accuracy (its always exactly how the receiving player wants it).
Honestly think he would not only get into our first 11, but would be considered one of our most important players.
The only thing I don't like are his theatrics and diving, which are dipper level embarrassing, so hope he can get rid of that side if he comes

Precious as fuck

Haha. I'm really not. I like our squad, in fact I love our squad of players. It's dead easy to love them and to defend them. Grealish is a Villa player who although talented has enough 'flaws' that I don't need to go easy on him at all.

Apologies if you find that precious. It is kinda funny.

Fair enough. But I just don't see how you can criticize these types of numbers, especially given he missed three months of the season AND is playing for, at best, a mid-table side. Apologies for the shit screen grab!

I was reading a few other forums over the weekend (Everton/Spurs/Villa/Wolves), and a common theme identified was how we really are a unique team/squad, with no identifiable star player or combinations. Anyone coming in may be the protagonist at their club, but they’d have to accept that our ethos requires submission to the greater good, so Grealish would doubtless understand what that means.
Our signings in recent years (Bernardo, Mahrez, Torres) show that our management have a vision of squad development that is more far-sighted than our collective short-term musings, so if they take Grealish this summer, it will make sense down the line.

The numbers are excellent for Villa. But they're not for me within the context of our squad. We've got four guys who would get those numbers playing for Villa at least. I don't see anything that would make him stand out beyond Foden, Bernardo, Mahrez, KDB, Gundo et al. And he has no unique attributes that make me think that he's a missing piece in the squad. Talented player for sure, and if he was going on a free or he had a contractual issue I would almost see why City would be all over it. But at 75 million with the players we already have, I can only see it if we think we're about to lose someone.

We can fit Grealish into the squad as it is. He can play in the middle or out wide so we could fit him somewhere. We didn't replace David Silva last year, so we're a midfielder down on where we were 12 months ago and we know Pep likes lots of midfielders and options. He is a quality player, exactly the type of player Pep likes.

Add in that Aguero and Garcia are certain leavers that opens up two spaces in our current squad for two incomings. We won't replace Garcia with a defender so makes sense to look at the midfield area.

The issue I think we'll have is the cost of it. Striker had to be the priority and if it is Kane that will set us back £100m +. To fork out another £70m + with no real outgoings, I'm not sure how feasible that is. But then again, I have no clue about what we can afford, who else is potentially leaving within the current squad and how much we'll recoup from the CFG players.

English contingent, Gundo/Kev/Mahrez not getting any younger, Raz/Mahrez needing new deals, possibility as said by many that someone may fancy a new challenge.

Lots of variables in play, and then it also comes down to do you rate the guy, and personally I think he’s awesome and would be devastating in our team.

Good succession planning ? Another year of ferna - trialing switching Gundo back and playing grealish and getting grealish settled (as we know it takes players most of a season to get used to what pep wants generally).

Then next year we are set in midfield for a few more years and Ferna steps into a coaching role.

Only way I see it working, or as you say one is out the door and I know where I would put my money on that front.

Grealish makes things happen. When he's on the ball he always looks a threat & creates plenty of opportunities & for me he would be a big improvement on Sterling.

Sterling?
