Champions League Final | Post-Match Thread

Horror show, got it wrong. We did well so far having no unnecessary big brains stuff with tactics or lineup. But it is what it is. Don't think any player is at fault. Just lacked that edge due to a poor setup that played into Chelsea's hands very easily.

Overall, I must admit I expected that to an extent. It was eventually gonna happen. But it can only be a learning lesson, it was a first CL final for our squad bar Gündogan. We will be back and get to another final soon enough. Heads high and well done to all the players, great season regardless. A final loss hurts but we will bounce back. Up the blues!

I am angry.. we deserved to lose but would like to see the handball again? I couldn’t tell if it was.. my two (no city fans) I watched it with claimed it was a blatant hand ball.. anyone got a video?

Honest question now. If we won the next 5 leagues and no UCL would we be happy? I love the league and I love it more than any other competion but progress and our ultimate goal has to be the UCL. It goes from being what fans want to what is possibly best for City. Tonight hurts because I think deep down we know this. Otherwise we wouldn't care having already won the league. I'm gutted because I want to see City reach the peak of football.

What people don't understand is, if you lose you're damned if you change it and you're damned if you don't. Ferdo and Rodri started the FA Cup defeat against Chelsea, they've beaten us twice recently so who wouldn't try something different? If it was that simple we'd all be managers. If we were that bad we'd havew won nothing. Even Mount is just saying they've more or less just won because they got one break and spent the rest of the game defending, at least they recognise we weren't as bad as people make out.
But to play with our either is baffling

I think we would have lost regardless of who started. We don’t know how to create chances against a very well-organised Chelsea side.

It was an extremely underwhelming final.
I think we created enough chances the last time we played Chelsea, with our second team against their best team.

Today we just played very badly, both players and manager.

He still made a stupid decision, and then he was too proud to correct it. CFC were getting straight onto our defence throughout that 1st half and of course they would. They had 3 quick forwrds whose game is made for that.

Pep played straight into Tuchel's hands. He made another colossal mistake. If he got fired tonight, no one would blame Mansour.
Lol crazy talk. So having achieved what no other city manager ever has under pep you would like him sacked and not have 3/4 PL titles, cup finals, records... Ditch all that potentially because of losing the CL final?

Ah well you're entitled to your pov but that's spurs sacking poch sort of talk.

Guts me that Rodri was supposed to be a Fern replacement but just isn't good enough and that's left us with a gap in midfield.

Pep has always had something personel with Sergio too and that's cost us our greatest ever striker.

I just hope that Pep gets the players he wants for next season and the players we have remember the feeling of losing in a final.
TBH Has always felt that way to me regards Aguero.

Maybe it is an Ego thing with Pep.

I feel like he wanted to get rid of Kun when he arrived, But his goals to atio made him untouchable

Now using the excuse it is injury related.

Just my opinion.

It wasn't a handball. It wasn't. I want it to be so I can be mad, but really it bounced off his chest onto his upper arm and he had no clue.

We all could have predicted that Chelsea team tonight. However, Pep picked a team unlike any other we’ve put out all season, including the big games in the Champions League semis and quarters. Maybe it is something he’d worked on with the team for weeks but it didn’t look that way on the pitch.

Chelsea are a quality side with three centre backs, two holding midfielders, and hard working players in the other positions. We needed to accept that we might need till extra time to get a goal. Instead we put out a team like we were already a goal down and desperately chasing the game.

It’s been a good season but after a game like that you can’t help feeling disappointed.

For such a good side we perform like tonight’s game an awful lot, so maybe tonight isn’t all down to the selection and formation for this game. It certainly helps the case for signing a Kane or Haaland because if this is our plan B we need another one.

Pretty much the same team and certainly the same formation beat PSG and Dortmund, home and away. I like Raz but he has been off his A game for months. To remove the DM exposed our back two and reduced the pass options for the full backs. Phil has been fantastic out wide and he puts him and to a certain extent Bernie, central!
I just don't understand.

No one does even the clappers

This all goes back to the Leeds loss for me. Win that and Pep probably plays full strength team in cup semi and hopefully win. Then doesnt start to build Chelsea confidence. Of course Sergio penalty didn’t help In league game. Teams thrive on winning, no doubt Chelsea felt confident against us today and Pep over thought it.

Still got to focus on positives fro the season. It’s just harder when you end he season with a loss.

To be honest even if Ferna was there and we played same way as the semi I'm not sure it's going to be much different. They basically put 8 players behind the ball, suffocated the middle, and they just need to pass the ball to their wingers as fast as possible. Not that much different from how Wolves beat us 2 times last season really. We tried an attacking lineup, played a slow passing game and that played right into their hands.
With the players we have currently I can only think of one solution, which is to play more direct (like Ederson did in the first minutes).
As I've stated all night basically. Got to get more penetration against counter attacking defensive teams . Maybe let them have the ball so they have to create instead of living off our mistakes/dispossession. They play a negative game I feel but it wins against open teams like us. Pep looked clueless after they scored . Fern changed it a bit but even then it's no guarantee. Damage had been done .

Nothing we can say can change what has happened. It is set in stone so we will just have to live with it.
Losing a game can happen, that's football, but to be utterly toothless for 97 minutes needs to be looked at seriously in the next few weeks and a plan devised to address it so it doesn't happen again. Easier said than done I am sure.
