That is the harsh truth. We didn't carve out a clear opportunity at any point. They had several. Ed was brilliant on what should have been their second. Made himself very big. Reminded me of Joe at his best.

Have we fuck been sussed. Brighton played against 10 men for most of that game and had Attwell and Moss as extra men.

Just won the league by 12 points and we've been sussed. FFS.
 
The personnel isn’t even the biggest factor, just the insistence on the high press and playing such a high line against teams that have enough quality on the ball to play past the press and then enough pace up front to get behind us and have 1v1s.

Leicester with Vardy have killed us with it.
Scum have beaten us in 3/4 of the last league matches (the other was a draw).
Chelsea/Tuchel have beaten us three times in a row.
Lyon did it last year (when we had 3 CDMs but still played a high line).
Liverpool did it 3 times in 2018.
Against Spurs twice in 2020 (plus conceding 4 in two UCL legs).
Even Arsenal have done it (FA cup).

But Pep just doesn’t seem to learn. The same mistakes against those teams, over and over and where they have that quality on the ball and pace in attack; they take the risk of letting us play in their half and then take their chances when they inevitably come. Restricting us to chances with 8/9/10 players behind the ball and then getting 1v1 chances in return.

Then there’s his experimentalism. Against Liverpool in 2018 he played Laporte at left back for the first time and we lost.
Against Lyon we played Gundo, Dinho and Rodri in midfield (but still a v high line) and we lost.
This year we had neither Rodri nor Dinho for the first time all season.
He’s talked so many times about the difference between winning and losing being what happens in both boxes, but he insisted on not playing the person who’s expertise is getting it right in the box.

I’ll say it again. That despite all the amazing things he has done for us, it is all about him. All about his ego. He will always take the risk of the club suffering if he could end up being seen as a genius.
He’ll stick to his style even if it keeps defeating us and has been worked out, if there’s a possibility that it will end up looking like his ideas were what won us the game.
 
We invited friends round for a meal in the garden yesterday. They know nothing of football except what I tell them, and that was simple enough. "We've known our best team and best formation for a month and the only issue was between two players for one crucial position and at the last minute the manager chose neither of them."

What’s more frustrating is that we actually stopped doing it against Dortmund and PSG. The reason we actually got to the final this year was that we played a deeper defensive line, didn’t give so much space behind and didn’t insist on pressing so much.
It’s a massive reason why we turned our season round also. And I reckon that’s the influence of his Assistant.
But in the key moments, he just couldn’t resist it.

It’s not. He didn’t get it right but the idea that he tinkered with the team suggests it was more an indulgence or he didn’t know what he was doing but thought he had to do something. He picked the team which, with hindsight, didn’t work out, then the players played badly.

What football tactic book says put your leading scorer defensive mid so that when he isn't doing the job he's not really capable of, and rarely if ever has played there, wants to join the attack he has to do more running than anyone else on the pitch to do that, expending energy he really should be conserving to do the job our DM was not really capable of and was 30 yards behind the play when they scored?

Well that’s our manager and he has delivered 3 of the last 4 league titles. Do you think he tinkered with the team last December?

Yes pretty incredible. When pep explained how hard it is for him telling players they aren't in the starting 11, I really worried how he would feel after giving either Rodri or Fernandinho the bad news.
Can't believe he ended up telling them both they weren't playing. Must be a Masacist
I actually think he over thinks it in big games and this coupled with his massive ego (which is great day to day as he is the boss of lots of other big egos) means he goes way off track in pressure moments. As he's the king, none of the court jesters dare to question him

There are rumours the players were aghast with the selection.Pep is a genius but he keeps making the same mistakes.I suppose this makes him the same as the rest of us.Do we always learn from our mistakes?
However he is the leader of our club
and as such we have to believe he will get it right in the CL eventually.
Im sure he will change us again next season and we will all be amazed.Not one of the top managers would i swap for him.

I tried to see it positively, another master stroke. Obviously after 20 minutes it wasn't and we hadn't seen any of our creative players.

I would have loved to see Pep bite the bullet, crook Raz for Dinho and revert to form.

You rarely see a Manager do that until the closing stages of a match when desperation sets in and the game plan goes out the window.

It is one if the bizarre traits of football management. Waiting for something to sort itself out instead of sorting it out. The use of substitutes in football is mainly academic and a complete waste of time, fuckin annoying.

Hindsight?

It wasn't hindsight.....as soon as that team went up,the outcome was predictable.I literally went from total confidence to little faith in an instant.

The players played poorly,but they were set up to do so.

It was an unnecessary and baffling fuck up,similar to those on previous big occasions,and the ones we thought he would learn from and not repeat.....
