Lead news on BBC troops sent to Greater Manchester to help with mass testing to stop the cases rising.

All GM Residents told to minimise travel. Much of Lancashire too.

A few days late but hopefully will turn the tide as with Bolton.

BBC say the move in GM 'has been on the cards for a while'....so why the wait? Should have happened last week.

Now GM will likely get the blame for any delay to the opening up of the restrictions everywhere.

Especially as Liverpool data is oddly still low. Though Wirral has started to spike so you would assume Liverpool will too.
Difficult for us to minimise travel at the moment, we’re in Gibraltar!

There are at least two proposals.

1) Give people a 3rd dose of an existing vaccine.

2) Release variant vaccines as booster.

2nd option certainly sounds better but as to what's involved? Can't be that automatic otherwise we'd be using them now. Current vaccines won't stop transmission.
Thanks for that. Option 2 sounds better. I read somewhere that anti variant fixes hoped to be ready Sept Oct . To go with flu vax?
Obvs anti variant will need tweeking each year for some years, as flu is now.

The top 20 England hotspots have a familiar ring today in the 5 day old data

Borough / Weekly Pop (as was 5 days ago - current one for GM added by me)

1 Blackburn 516

2 Bolton 320 (now 314)

3 Rossendale 285

4 Hyndburn 244

5 Burnley 206

6 Ribble Valley 197

7 Manchester 190 (now 227)

8 South Ribble 178

9 Salford 176 (now 237)

10 Bury 174 (now 201)

11 Preston 171

12 Stockport 146 (now 199)

13 Bedford 138

14 Rochdale 123 (now 148)

15 Chorley 122

16 Trafford 117 (now 158)

17 Wigan 117 (now 164)

18 Kirklees 111

19 Pendle 108

All the others are below 100

Missing GM areas are Oldham in 23rd was 88 now 101

And Tameside in 24th was 85 now 104

Cheshire East was in 25th on 84 but has risen steeply too so will likely be at least where Tameside is now.

Blackpool 27 and Fylde 30 - so it is a NW sweep almost.

The only area in here further south than Leicester are Bedford, Reading and Luton

Liverpool is showing signs of rising too it seems.

Whwn I last looked last week it was in the 200s below 20 It is now on 28 and in 127th place. Still doing remarkably well considering. Wirral is well above it now.

There's a 100+ page thread on this forum about foreign holidays being unlikely this year. We're now being told to restrict our movements in and out of GM altogether. We have a family trip to Anglesey booked in a couple of weeks so I'm now going to have the worry of receiving an email from our accommodation there cancelling our booking because of this. Brilliant.

Wonder if they allow all over 18s the jab. Didnt that happen in Bolton?

Really shitty attitude given the lack of single dosed, let alone double dosed, people given the snail pace rollout.
But younger people are generally not at risk of death though.
There is more chance of dying in a road accident in a calendar year for people under the age of 40 for example.
It's a people demographics risk thing.
Those under 40 need to be vaccinated or catch it to protect the rest of society from the next bad variant that could be many times worse.
Those at risk who didn't accept jabs when offered should not hold back the economy - they need to isolate and be vaccinated.

London also exponential, also <two week doubling

Yes the daily numbers I posted last night showed that. Still way behind GM. Zoe akso as I reported yesterday had lots of places in London in the early watch zones after having almost none a few days ago.

Even the SW is spiking well up around Dawlish and other popular spots. As in Denbighshire in Wales. Drakeford commented regretfully they cannot stop this variant in effect partly wrecking all their hard work to get where they are.

Hope everyone ignores it, what a joke.

Local BBC news just said can someone in Stockport go on holiday to Norfolk?

Answer - yes, but we would rather you do not.

Andy Burnham says he was assured this is not a local lockdown.

No - its worse. Its a do what you want and then if you mess up we can all blame you for wrecking Britain by declining our advice not us.

Ridiculous. Pretty obvious how well this 'advice' will be followed.

Then who will be blamed for spreading it to the rest of the UK.

Lessons:

COVID isn't a "local" disease. When it's growing somewhere, you can expect it to grow everywhere, without action.

Because the growth is exponential (and potentially hidden if it's a new variant) it can very rapidly turn around. This will now happen in London, unless vaccination stops it, or other action is taken. If we open up further, it will happen faster.

We know all this already.

Got a lads trip to Anglesey on the 18th for a week in privately rented accom (mate of a mate) think we're going to be looked at as scum if we can get there. All fully vaccinated but of course can still carry it.

Looking at the Wales figures, if you lived there you'd not want any NW people knocking about.
