Coronavirus (2021) thread

It's absolutely crazy, Australia and NZ are targeting "zero covid", will never ever happen. Some of the clowns in charge here also are seeking this but it is unrealistic and pointless.

probably saved hundreds of thousands of deaths though this way - what a terrible strategy aye

Prof Ferguson "almost certainly probably 50% less infectious".

This is what we're dealing with.
Welcome to the world of epidemiology, where there are no absolutes and no definites. Unfortunately that's the aspect of science that people who are desperate for absolutes and definites have difficulty getting their heads around. It's frustrating for the vast majority of people who just want their lives back but the reality is that nobody can say for sure how it is going to pan out - not the scientists and certainly not the people who have decided that the scientists are lying/overcautious/controlled by 'big pharma' or space lizards.

It blows my mind that people believe we should have completely shut the borders.

They're the 2017 trade figures for the UK. What do you suppose we do if suddenly close to £600bn in exports disappears? Where do you suppose we'd manage to find the equivalents of c£640bn of imports in good old blighty?

Honestly the short sightedness of some people throughout this thread has been astounding.

Yes but I'm making a point that zero covid won't ever happen and every country needs to realise that.

sure, but in the meantime let's jab away and work on better treatments and we can keep this at bay forever.
rather than saying f*ck it, open up, we've had enough'

41 cases of new variant that's being called 'Delta plus' in India have been sequenced in UK

This morning we have been telling you about a new strain of the Delta variant that has been labelled "Delta plus" in India - and now it has emerged there have been 41 cases picked up in the UK.

Health officials in India believe the strain is more transmissible than the prevalent Delta mutation

No, I understand that, but scientists can have clearer communication than stabbing every "definitely maybe" into a sentence. One would have sufficed, more indicates guessing and lack of confidence in what you're saying to the average joe.

what happened to the Greek alphabet for new variants? . I don’t recall that delta plus follows delta .

they may as well have said we told you about delta and that didn’t scare you enough so it’s now a new and improved scarier version

DELTA PLUS!!! BE AFRAID !!!!

This makes absolutely no sense, how is it possible that this variant is here? India has been on the red list for 2 months and for red list countries you MUST go into a hotel for 10 days.

If it's so extra transmissible then this would not translate into just 41 cases in 2 months.

bit crazy how it was mentioned late last night to be discovered in India

and now we have 41 cases of it the next morning

They are right to wait and I believe the wait will help but they really do need to stop publishing the figures now and move on from it.
Flu & Pneumonia figures are now TEN times higher than covid + covid deaths now make up only approx 0.8%
I do appreciate that this is an ever changing situation but they need to stop the fear campaign and gag some of them who are drunk on spreading fear.
People have had quite rightly had enough.

but the NHS can deal with Flu & Pneumonia figures - we have measures in place for this.

what we can’t afford is Covid on top to spiral out of control , hence we need to keep such a close eye on figures.

Why is no-one in the media asking the question as to how someone travelled from India, spent 10 days in a hotel, tested negative every single time and then went about spreading this new variant around?

It makes NO sense.

OK but if Bungling Boris hadn't let the flights in from India we would now be free.
I hope they are all brought to task in the review next year and if necessary damages filed against them.

Because the whole isolation thing is incredibly pointless and full of loopholes.

Most people flying back from places like India stop off in other countries and switch airlines. You could be an air hostess on Etihad flying to and from Abu Dhabi a few times a week, no need to quarantine in a hotel, yet half the passengers on your flights do have to!

They haven't thought any of it through and there is no perfect system.

the data suggests otherwise about the nhs dealing with this , deaths from flu and pneumonia are 10 times higher now than Covid.

it’s a paywall but you can see it in first para or go on ONS site where the data came from.

we don’t have daily flu deaths announced , even though now much higher.

They're planting the seeds for the next wave of restrictions and lockdowns.

We should all be terrified of this minutely different version of an existing strain of COVID our country has 80%+ immunity against.
