Diabetes

First week of taking 3 a day it was a bit iffy, but that was about 7 weeks ago now. I've not had anything bad with it, which from what i've heard is a stroke of luck. I was anticipating bad things in terms of side effects.
Sorry to butt in, but on the metformin it took a few weeks for my stomach to settle down when I was first on it, same with a friend of mine ..

I'm seeing my mates daughter on Monday for a health check. Amongst other work she is a holistic therapist specialising in getting people back on track with health, nutrition, diet and exercise. I could do with losing a few pounds but am reasonably active for my age (62), I still work and play golf and do a bit on the exercise bike. However, I really want to reverse the type 2 diabetes that I was diagnosed with in 2007, I caught Covid and consider myself lucky to get away with the illness relatively unscathed, I want to be better prepared if it happens again. I'll update on how my session goes.

Hi folkes just been diagnosed with this, just wondering how this effects you drinking gave up cigs 10 years ago can't do without a pint thou.Anyone who has any info greatfuly appreciated,
Welcome to the free prescription club .

Only joking. You could buy a decent blood glucose monitor and test strips online. Have they put you on any medication ?

Oops just realised how old this thread is

I have both those books - the one he's penned and the other one which I think his wife has contributed to with the recipes. Michael is a great advocate of weight loss being the answer for a lot of people who are heading for T2. It's bloody hard losing any. I'm gonna have to kick the bread maker into the South Stand. The book with recipes has a lot of stuff that has never been part of any diet of mine. I'm a little too fond of chips 'n bacon butties. Portion control is also a good starter. Don't bother weighing out stuff -just use a smaller plate.
After 3 months following the spirit of the diet rather than blind observance my HbA1c is down to 52. Fortunately the diet is one of those that is relatively easy to continue forever so hopefully will get to see a few more titles yet!

I posted on feb or March in here.
I have lost 2 stone from then as of Friday weigh-in. A couple of concerns:
1. I’ve slacked off my exercise but continue to lose weight. I presume from the Metformin?
2. My appetite is dead. I have to force food down so I can take my meds. This is a recent thing. Can anyone relate? My missus is concerned. I’m not.

I can snack like anything. Eating biltong right now, but a main meal is a struggle. It’s the last two weeks I’ve noticed this.

Only thing I have noticed that way is if I eat a large meal it goes straight through

I think your body has recognised the new routine and your stomach has gotten smaller. It also depends on what foods you've given up as certain cravings for certain foods disappear once starved of them.

Quite easy to return to it if you give it less than a week of your old habits!

I did the fasting diet and after 2 weeks in I didn't want to eat more than a meal a day and could have just lived on water for a few days at a time, but I thought that might have been unhealthy.

If it's still happening in 3-4 weeks, visit the GP.

Dr phoned me today after i had some bloods done and told me my Hb1ac meant I was diabetic. Weirdly he said i'm going to give you chance to get your HB1AC down before i put your diagnosis on record. I gave him my thanks...Then thought...wtf would he do that...i guess my car insurance might take an hit but i'm struggling to work out any other advantages.

My paranoid brain then buts in and reminds me how he hates prescribing life saving and quality of life drugs for my lad(he has complexed gastro endocrine probs and he didn't prescribe something his specialist endocrinologist wrote to him and requested he do(stomach culture targeted antibiotic). So is his reluctance to diagnose really to benefit me or his G.P NHS bonus related pay.
of course he might just be a dick but it seems weird.

Might just be a “hassle” for them to change it just in case you reverse it through your diet.. Not made a difference to my car insurance, I’m type 2..

One advantage of him putting you down as diabetic is that you get free prescriptions for everything :)

MMMm thanks mate, i wonder if they are on some sort of prescription related bonus. ;)

I found i only had to tell my travel insurance, and it didn't make any difference to me premium.

As above maybe he's giving you a chance to try reverse it.
Mine had crept up again 2 weeks ago so i've gone back on low carb no sugar diet.
Lost 7 lb and bloods down by 3.

Who knows lol... What I do know is talk to other diabetics and do some research and not just go with what the nurse or doctor tells you you should take.. For instance : My sugars just on metformin were a little high so she gave me an extra table,, it took my levels down nicely, we didn’t realise at the time that the pill was also a hunger suppressant . Fine for a lot of type 2’s. But I’m 6 foot and already weighed around 10 3/4 of a stone .. Friends were asking my wife if I were ill .. she saw me completely naked one evening and commented “Oh god , I’m married to a scrawny old man” ;) (56 by the way)
So horses for courses , hope you sort it out with your diet tho , save any bedroom abuse ;)

I had a couple of sessions with an holistic therapist, one about diet and one on exercise. The diet one was really interesting, diet drinks are not good for diabetics, they spike the diabetes just as sugar does. Any food that is in packets or tins has preservatives in them which are not good for diabetics, instead of a packet of ham, buy from the deli counter instead. Don't eat white carbs (white bread, rice, pasta amongst others) as they breakdown to sugars and only have one piece of fruit in your 5 a day. Eat as many vegetables as possible, ideally the evening meal should have 2/3 veg and 1 protein with as little fat as possible. Finally, beer or stout and white wine are much better than lagers and ciders if you are having a drink.

My new exercise bike has arrived so I'll be giving that a whirl but short bouts of quick exercise such as reps with dumbbells and squats are better to help the diabetes rather than doing endurance work, as fast as possible to get you out of breath (not too much) is a better short term plan.

The girl I've seen has a good record of reversing diabetes.

This is a couple of years old. It's long, but it's amazing in detail.

I think this is brilliant...

Fasting is amazing for you're health and it is free! But big pharma can't make any money of this so doctors will not mention it. I quite often will fast from 8pm at night until I get home from work in the evening next day, amazing I have more energy and clarity while in a fasted state. Lots off success with reversing diabetes type 2 and fatty liver, along side a low carb/sugar high protein/fat diet

I’ve been diagnosed with pre diabetes with a reading of 43.I’m considering doing a fast but a bit concerned because I do a physical job and how this could affect me while I’m working.

Intermittent fasting has been mentioned on the board before, but I cannot recall the amount of detail and benefits Dr Jamnadas gives.

Quite, honestly, it's worth sitting through the 80 min lecture.

Just as an aside in the comments section, a poster mentions that this cardiology doc has kept his father alive for 15 years as well as the reversal of a lot of states in the body the braver you are to fast longer.

I hope to work up to those experimental levels, myself!
