I’d read previously that we are talking more in the “gentleman’s agreement” area, rather than release clause territory anyway.

There is that.

Many assume it is already done and just waiting on him to return from holiday. With Villa trying to 'tempt him to change his mind'. Seems to be how it is packaged up just now.

They aren't in European competition so there's no real FFP to worry about. The PL FFP is incredibly loose.

It actually makes sense for them to load up on very good young players now, and then they have lots of assets that are worth more than they paid and can be used to fund bigger deals, or are just good enough for the next level for when they get into Europe in a year or two.
 
I don't really want us to sign him but if he has any ambition why would he stay at Villa? He could be in a team challenging for every trophy they are in or scrapping to get in the top 10 there.

It's a bit like when Shearer always goes on about staying at Newcastle rather than going to the rags when they were good. That was a stupid decision.

He didn't. Shakhtar asked more than we were prepared to offer. Utd were happy to offer that.

Hence the for comments that the same Could happen with Kane, Grealish, or even Haaland if it came to any interest. Just as it did with Koulibaly, Jorginho, Alves, Sanchez, Isco snd others where there is a gap to bridge. The club have shown repeatedly they are happy to go for alternatives, most often for no less money, where they won't pay anove what they value a player.

I think Villa will be a Europa League/Challenging for CL team within 3 years without Grealish, and next season with him. They were 6 points behind the race for 3rd/4th for most of last season with 2 games in hand until Grealish and some other key players got injured - there's a decent chance they finish 4th if he stayed fit.

They have a lot of ambition, a very good manager and are putting a great squad together.

The Premier League's "middle class" of Leicester, Everton, Villa, Wolves is stronger than it's ever been before, and with some of the old elite, ie Arsenal, Spurs tripping up, there's going to be real competition for the Europa places.

So I think there's more incentive to stay at one of those clubs than there was a few years ago.


Still think Grealish will leave though, or try to at least.

Maybe there is a release clause but we won’t trigger it until we offload a specific player.

He's not the brightest button in the box, but he seems to very much enjoy his life as it is. It's now just about whether he wants to be a big fish in a little pond, or a smaller fish in an ocean.

It's the same in any job. If you're happy with what you've got, why change it?

Regular football and local legend status, or rotation and just another player?

The lad will probably get similar wages at Villa and will still be in the England set up. He loves his club and would love to see them back in the top 5 or 6. Nowt wrong with that.

If roles were reversed, what do you think Phil Foden would want to do?

Why would you think they will replace any of last seasons top 4? They had a good season relatively last term but I just don't see them improving much, their Manager is a second tier gaffer, doesn't have the nous or guile of Pep and certainly doesn't have the squad to get top 4.

I also think they are one of the teams that can push for top 4. Them and Leicester (who missed out of the top 4 by one point last season) could be more of a threat than the likes of Arsenal and Spurs imo. Not saying they’ll get it but they could be a threat to other clubs.

Villa fans don't rate their Manager at all, he could be gone by Xmas if they don't start well.
No chance in hell that Villa finish top 6, absolutely no chance
