Help please re a laptop

Is it a windows 10 machine or Ubuntu? If it's a Windows 10 I'd upgrade to Pro (normally £120 using the official store) and turn bitlocker on if it's Ubuntu then you don't need to worry about it as your disk drive will already be encrypted. They shouldn't need your passwords to do tests on the components. Also Just deleting files doesn't make them disappear. If you want to try and make them disappear for good then use a tool like Erasure.
 
Sounds like a faulty battery tbh mate, i'd be surprised if they didn't just replace the battery, switch it on to see if it keeps charge (most likely it will) and then send it back.

Oh if only they had! I had it back just 5 days when it went again! They took it back again at 7.40 this morning! I’m not used to people knocking on my door at that time of day! :-)

Thank you. Then it must be another fault maybe in the plug or adapter? We shall see what happens this time. At least they are very prompt at picking it up but it doesn’t help when I had a ‘holiday’ planned to concentrate on some computer based family history stuff! I’ve got a week with nothing else planned. Using an iPad isn’t the same. Ah well that’s life.

If it's still not working when you get it back then it's possibly a software driver issue or the charger itself is faulty (I'm guessing they only took the laptop itself to test?). I'm presuming the laptop lasts a decent amount of time when fully charged but won't recharge when flat BTW.

The software driver can be re-installed by following the video below (3:25 to 4:00). I've posted it at the correct start time for you.



It's worth making sure that everything is updated and the short (3:21) video below will walk you through it.

My laptop won't let me type in question marks or the @ symbol and is playing up when I want to use capitals.
I have turned it off, restarted and uninstalled an update from earlier today.

Any suggestions?

And fuck off @BlueMoonRisin’ before you start!

It's probably been infected with a virus from all the salmon porn you've been watching mate.

That sounds like your 'Shift' key is goosed, does it work using the other side?

Caps Lock key? That's not supposed to work for the alternative symbols (not on a desktop at least). You use the Shift key for those. (usually an upward arrow)

Edit: The Shift key also gives you upper case letters, or lower case if Caps Lock is on.

No it just won’t retain its charge. I had it plugged in to the mains and it was fine for 2 days charged up to 100% (foolishly I only checked on the first two days back) then on the 5th day it suddenly closed down even though it was plugged in. No warning of anything.

They took the laptop and the adapter plug.
