On your second point about needing success I'm talking about the club needing current levels of income to sustain itself. Its not rocket science, look at Arsenal since they swapped CL money for Thursday money. In the scenario I'm talking about we have 5 really strong clubs, Newcastle, City, Utd, Liverpool and Chelsea, 5 into 4 doesn't go. One well run, successful club will miss out if they make even a couple of mistakes, Utd are a more recent example of quickly it can go wrong. Mistakes at that level are much harder to rectify, they are a lot more expensive than Bony and Jo, mistakes like Ozil, Sanchez and Ronaldo can cripple a club. Post Pep that could easily be you given history also tells us that legendary managers are very rarely adequately replaced.

But United have finished outside that 4, five times, in the last nine years; Liverpool have finished outside that 4, six times in the last eleven years; Chelsea have finished outside that 4, three times in the last nine years…

City have finished outside that 4, ZERO times, in the last eleven years; we have only finished outside the Top 2, twice, in the last ten years.

We’ve done that because we are the best run club.

Liverpool aren’t particularly well run, they’ve just got a great manager who’s been able to invest in the team in one go to build a good team once, and their board don’t invest in the team anymore. By next Summer, every one of their best players will be over 30, and they have no real strength in depth or succession plan for these players. That’s poor from them considering they have earnt £1.45bn in the last three years. Where the fuck the money goes at Liverpool is a mystery.

United are terribly ran. There are a dozen clubs better run than United. They’ve got no plan at all on the football side of things.

City and Chelsea are much better run than those two. That’s why you’ll get City and Chelsea fans welcoming new challenges from clubs like Newcastle being taken over and fans of Liverpool and United crying about it.

And we don’t yet know how well run Newcastle will be. They might not be particularly well run. They might make a lot of mistakes. There could be another club who does better than them. Everton could move to their new ground and attract more investment and do better than Newcastle. Having money is no guarantee of anything, QPR have the fourth biggest backers behind them in English football and they’re nowhere, SheffUtd have Saudi backers and they’re nowhere.

On the sponsorship issue.

There must be plenty of Saudi companies that are not owned by those in charge of Newcastle.

As far as I’m aware, HRH doesn’t own Etihad Airways nor Etisalat.
 
At the moment we have little idea of how Newcastle's future will unfold. The immediate problem seems to be a ruthless attempt by the PL acting as a cartel to prevent any of the new money being used by he club. I think this can only be dealt with in and by the courts and it concerns us because bans aimed at specific areas and specific clubs would be used over and over again by the cartel if they got away with this one. A victory for Newcastle would open up a much less complicated future for them. Removing any ban on related deals would be helpful, getting rid of "fair market value" would be better and having the ban on unlimited owner investment better than anything. All are possible and I would say likely. Then they can get down to football!

So far they have said their aim is to follow City's example and there won't be many who would criticise that approach on here. We know the pitfalls to be avoided - players who see a cash cow, big names rather than team players and so on, City did well avoiding them and Newcastle can, providing they get the best backroom staff they can and the best manager. And then there is the chance factor. We missed out narrowly on 4th in 2010, we were 7 minutes away from going out of the FA cup in2011 and the last game of'11-'12 was too hairy to forget. By 2012 we were at the top table domestically but had certain days not gone our ay it could have delayed our success and thus radically altered our future. Patience will be essential for supporters and that seemed in short supply last Sunday.

Presumably that's true but the regulation discussed in the week seemed to be moving to a new definition of related which applied to only two clubs and one specific region.

Will never happen imho, and, even if it did, there would be plenty of companies willing to put 20 million into Newcastle sponsorship in return for a billion dollar contract in Saudi.

This is something the cartel can't win, either legally or in practice.

Our owners are too nice, Saudis will be ruthless, I imagine.

Indeed they will do whatever is necessary, they will have a spare royce engine for every 2 jets if needed, spunk an extra 3 bn to bomb the shit out of yeman, they could get boeing and airbus to share the same space ffs

Why have you bought into the media anti Saudi narrative about Yemen ?

Are you aware of Irans involvement or our backing of the Saudis fearing an Iranian victory in the Yemen ?
War is wrong but look at both sides before hating someone/a country.

Iran’s involvement in Yemen is much more damaging and they launder money via standard chartered but that money is ok erm because of ‘istory
