Aston Villa Thread - 2021/22

Clearly Villa is being used as a “bridge” to managing at the dippers.

Going from a 2 team league of Scottish lollipop ladies to the dippers would be way too much of a leap.
The scousers appointed Souness under those circumstances, a big gamble for slippy g this. From guaranteed trophies to possible mid table or worse. Probably needs to turn Villa into a top 8 side consistently at the least to be considered while playing decent stuff.

I really cannot agree with your last sentiment and think that it is great when smaller clubs make it to the top flight. Would I miss Burnley if they got relegated? - no, but having teams from small towns getting to the Premier League is romantic and allows fans of almost any league club to dream of such success.
I’m not opposed to ANY club making it into the top flight, but when they do, and reap the rewards…even over many years…too many of them STAY “small time.”

They don’t improve facilities or improve the game day experience. For instance, there’s the whole “second season slump” that happens and many teams go back down, only to yo yo back up a year or two later!

If they invested some of their apL revenues in both players and facilities, they might transition into serious, long term, PL clubs with a future.

Burnley & Norwich have had donkeys years to improve themselves, but haven’t apparently seen the need.

While Norwich might be a nice (long!) day out, I’m struggling to find any redeeming value in Burnley staying up!

As much of a scouse **** he is I’ve always rated Gerrard.

Clearly vastly experienced and in interviews comes across as intelligent and very knowledgeable on the game.

He’ll do well at Villa imo.
Met him a couple of times in the mid naughties. He’s definitely above average intelligence. Quite perceptive and savvy. Suspicious type, as he’s entitled to be tbf.

Hard to make a success of the villa job, they're a side that could easily go down but have spent a shit load of money and have a few international players so would be seen as a huge failure if they did. Do well, get mid-table and it's seen as simply where they should be, zero chances of getting any higher and into Europe.

If the Liverpool job is already lined up for him and he simply has to transition I suppose keeping them up and waiting out Klopps inevitable meltdown can be seen almost as an induction, if he still has to impress to convince the candle worshippers then it'd be a poor move.

Slippy basically has a free pass at Villa , nothing he does there will effect him getting the dipper job. If he is a success then they are poaching a manager that they would see as taking the "cult" to new levels , and if he slips on his arse, then they are saving a club legend who just needs the right environment to take the club to new levels, and allow spitty to call him by his first name all the time !!

If Gerrard takes the villa job then the only way he gets his dream move to Liverpool is by taking villa into Europe. Otherwise he'll be branded as average at best, or a failure.

Perfect for Liverpool as they get to see him in action close up, and have a get out clause for appointing him if he doesn't do it.

I predict he'll backtrack out of this one.

They’re a decent side and have backing, just been experiencing a poor run of form of late. If they appoint Gerard, I would expect them to stabilize this season and push for the top 10 next season.

It’s going to become ferociously competitive in the coming seasons.

Very surprised if he takes this job obviously not had assurances that the job at Liverpool is his when klopp leaves, personally don't care if he takes it or not

That was in a time when Celtic and Rangers were actually any good though and Scottish football was better.

Inevitable meltdown? He’s been there now what 6 years? Christ. That’s probably the equivalent of the city owners “getting bored” practice what we preach guys.

Villa would be a decent draw for up and coming managers I imagine. Money to spend and a decent squad. I’d imagine making sure they stay up and build next season would be attractive to many. Also lazy to stay he’s only waiting for the liverpool job. Extremely lazy.

I think as long as he keeps them up and they show signs of improvement he’ll be considered a success and the “he’s ready” box will be ticked prior to taking over from Teeth at the end of next season.

Seems an odd move by Gerrard as the headwinds facing 2nd rank Premier League clubs are enormous.

2.5 year contract ... which takes him up to the summer of 2024.... funnily enough exactly when Klopps contract expires

Wonder how Villa fans feel about their club blatantly being used as a stepping stone
