Progressive Rock

Whilst it is nice to pay homage to the 70s greats (Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, ELP) and the 80s stalwarts (Marillion, IQ, Pendragon etc) there are some bands active post 2000 that are really worth spending time listending to;

Wilson/Porcupine Tree/No Man/Blackfield
Spocks Beard/Transatlanctic/Flying Colours
Pineapple Thief
Riverside
Abel Ganz
Dynamo Bliss
Ossicles
Huis
Amplifier
Airbag
Jakko M Jakszyk
Six Days End
Apostle
Pure Reason Revolution
Leprus
Loving The Sun.
You missed Big Big Train. Sadly their lead singer passed away a couple of weeks ago following an accident, but well worth listening to them.

Add Discipline, RPWL and Sylvan ( the band not the singer)

Two bands from the 90s that trod their own path but highly accessible are Echolyn... And Vulgar Unicorn. Both had a start on Cyclops records and both have good tunes...not always the case with Prog

Great band. Saw them live several times...
Post 2008 preferred them to Dream Theatre.
Also love Vanden Plans, especially beyond daylight.
Threshold, Dream Theater and Vanden Plas are the 3 prog metal bands I like maybe Arena would be in there too. Not keen on any others though. Well apart from Rush who I consider to be the original prog metal band.

I was at same gig (in a sports hall)
Yep.

There were 2 venues in Rotherham that I recall, one of them was a sports hall. Can’t recall the other but apart from Jump I saw IQ, Pendragon, Damien Wilson, Flower Kings, Oliver Wakeman (his dad knicked my seat) and Strange Fish (who were fucking awful).

Edit - it was the Herringthorpe Leisure Centre, a genuine theatre of dreams

I think I saw most of that. I think they even had flower kings and Threshold on same bill..

I bought " The Yes Album " from Yanks probably about 1978-1979 as a 13-14 year old
Its still deeply moving to me now as then.
When I now look and hear the utter shit my 14 year old listens to,its a different world for sure.
What a shop. For a few years, all roads led to Yanks. Anyone know when it first opened?

My prog rock god has to be the mercurial Chris Squire - RIP.
Here are my Top Ten favourite tracks that feature the most astonishing playing.
In no particular order
1. No opportunity necessary.
2. Long Distance Runaround
3. Into the Storm
4. Does it Really Happen
5. Tempus Fugit
6. Parallels
7. On the silent Wings of Freedom
8. The Gates of Delirium
9. Roundabout
10. Heart of the Sunrise.
And an honourable mention to “Hold out your Hand” from his solo album.
In.Credible playing on this.
The bass (of course), and SH’s ascending guitar lines before the vocals kick in:

Not sure when it first opened, but my mates dad owned the original Yanks records.
i used to get loads of stuff from there.
My mate moved back to the states in 1982, I actually met up with him for the first time in 35 years just before the pandemic.

Mostly Autumn were a regular too as were Karnataka. Rachel Jones had a stunning voice.
I kinda of knew mostly autumn in their early days. Use to record at Skelwith Bridge near Ambleside and hang out in the cottages there. I was a regular at the pub they frequented and would follow them on their gig circuit. Heather Findlay was stunning. Cracking live band in those early days. Lost interest later...
Heather went on to dump Fish at the alter...

Ooh, but of prog royalty gossip in that last line there! I’m a big fan of Fish, both solo and in the band beforehand, but never knew that. I’m guessing that happened at some point after Kayleigh and before his current partner!
