Hard to believe that someone at the club is now going to have to sit down with Phil, and maybe his family, and advise them on how best to keep safe in his own free time. Whatever form that takes, a security presence, being more selective on where he goes, how he travels, how 'safe' the venue is etc. it's such an imposition on his lifestyle and freedoms. I guess it's the price of fame but the same dickheads who set out to abuse sportsmen/celebs/musicians will no doubt be the same ones complaining about them having no connection with everyday life. I've seen a couple of footballers get shit in restaurants (Steve Bruce in Hale and Neville in Manchester) but nothing like that level of abuse and on both those occasions the abusers were left in no doubt as to what others thought of them. It's the scourge of social media that so many want their 15 minutes of fame and don't care how they get it.

What’s strange is that most City players, esp the foreign ones, like the fact that in Manchester they’re left alone, and people are generally respectful.

I saw Leroy Sané out in town heading back towards his apartment. We saw each other, I nodded, he carried on. No muss, no fuss.

Sadly, I think with Phil being such a local lad and the face, hair, tattoos and bling of his generation, he may have an exceedingly large target on his back.

Manchester is a very friendly city. Over the years I have met and seen many players on the streets and they do mostly get treated with respect. But there are risks at a big boxing event which makes it different. I was in town all Saturday and there were a lot of groups of pissed up/coked up young lads. To be fair most were just boisterous and the atmosphere in the pubs I went in before the game was fantastic and good natured. However I am sure it was a different vibe four hours later, not helped by City losing. Phil did the right thing going in a box at the arena but sometimes that is not enough. The security at the Arena is a joke and always has been, as shown by the Manchester bombing inquiry.

Invariably, most of these lads come from working class families who also have to reconcile that life will change for all the clan.

They are no longer from some non-descript neighbourhood, but connected to somebody earning more in a week than most will earn in ten years.

Parents, brothers and sisters, none of them probably have to worry again about money.

They also have to acclimatise to people who are jealous and see their son as an easy target.

100% true, it comes with the territory, the price of fame and fortune.

Anyone famous and in the public eye can no longer act as a 'normal" person, sad but true.

Spurs fans have always been gobby with nothing to back it up. They were the same in the 70s and 80s.

It’s a sad reflection on society, I know one former high profile player who has a couple of minders following him round from a distance if he goes out socialising .

As i said earlier in the thread, he's a major asset to the business Head of security at the club should ensure that there is a protocol for players to follow for this type of event and that includes education for families who should not be aggravating the situation and putting the "principal" in danger

My old man was a copper and worked all the Spurs home games back in the 70's 80's. He was in charge of booking the hoolies and putting them in the jail under the Shelf stand. Said Spurs fans were always cocky and nasty fans.
 
There's no excuse for punching a woman, even a gobby cow like Foden's mum. She'd probably beat Amir Khan as well.

I can't stand bellends like that. He says something to Noel Gallagher about football, provoking a reaction but rather than allow Noel to give his opinion and thus end up in a conversation with one of the most recognised British musicians ever, the thick **** decided to just waffle on over him with an odd bragging like attitude.

It's just like the same boring prick you bump into now and again when you happen to wearing something with the City crest on and you hear 'you've got some shit on your hat/shirt/whatever'

Instantly you know that this prick is a thick moron.

I don't engage with many folk at all these days. Can't help but think that the majority of people are needy braggers who are constantly after self gratification by goading or putting others down. Sad state of affairs really.

Yeah, one of my lad's best mates (ex Marine) currently does personal protection for a very wealthy Indian family. It's all about preventing situations occurring, if you have to deal with one, chances are you've not done your job properly in the first place.
